Job Description The Diagnostic Technician position, under general supervision, will collect and prepare samples, perform assays, and will record and report results for diagnostic specimens submitted from clients on behalf of the Molecular Diagnostics section. The testing performed will aid in diagnosis of animal conditions or diseases.
Sample Preparation, Sample Cataloging: Review submittal forms and interpret test requests/client instructions, ensure samples are fit for purpose of the requested test, and enter case data into a computer-based laboratory information management system (LIMS). Collect and prepare samples submitted for diagnostic testing using scissors, forceps, and/or scalpels, and perform molecular based testing (e.g. PCR, RT-PCR). May file and/or catalogue samples or other diagnostic material for archival purposes. May mix reagents and buffers.
Testing: Follow standard operating procedures in conducting routine diagnostic laboratory test methods (e.g., nucleic acid extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, etc.). Prepare reagents, standards and controls as needed. Generate appropriate forms and test documentation. Use, monitor, and maintain laboratory equipment and other scientific apparatus. Perform all work in accordance with validated test methods, SOPs, procedures, employee training and proficiency, and equipment standards, as applicable.
Data Entry, Interpretation, Results: Read, compute and record observations, results, and measurements into LIMS. Ensure documentation for all tests performed in the section meets quality assurance requirements.
Client Communication: Communicate with clients requesting basic testing details and capabilities.
Quality Assurance and Safety: Adhere and conform to quality assurance and safety programs and procedures. Assist in identifying incidents of nonconformance and noncompliance. Actively participate in quality assurance and safety programs.
SOPs, Procedures, Forms, Other Documentation: Review quality assurance documents to ensure clarity of instructions for entry level technicians.
Research, Reference Materials, Development: May assist with cataloging reference materials.
Supplies, Stock, Inventory, Equipment: Catalog incoming supplies and stock inventory. Inform management when supply inventory is low, inadequate, or expired
Administrative Roles: File, copy and/or scan relevant paperwork, including but not limited to worksheets, forms, accession forms, regulatory forms, quality assurance and safety documentation, equipment maintenance forms and logbooks.
Training and Mentorship: Cross train in duties with other technicians. Provide backup to fellow technicians in case of absences. Successfully complete proficiency tests for assigned assays.
Teamwork and Cooperation: Foster laboratory teamwork, cooperation, professional standards, and communication. May participate in flex scheduling, including work prior to 8am, after 5pm, on weekends or on holidays. Participate in cross-training with fellow technicians within section and may cross-train in other areas throughout the laboratory.
Other: Work shall be performed with adherence to federal, state, Texas A&M University System, and TVMDL safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Perform work in such a way as to not expose others or oneself to hazards that are avoidable by reasonable and approved methods.
Position Details - This position is required to work during normal business hours M-F 8 am - 5 pm.
- TVMDL is considered an essential component of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and remains operational for several "open holidays" in which overtime or compensatory time may be earned.
- TVMDL is located on the campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU). Parking permits are available from TAMU at the expense of the employee.
- This position is enrolled in TVMDL's Salary Step Program, guaranteeing two pay increases in the first 18 months of employment for satisfactory performance.
- This position requires a pre-exposure rabies vaccination series; TVMDL will cover all costs.
- This position may have access to equine or greyhound racing drug testing samples, records, and/or data and as such, the incumbent must have no financial interest in racehorses, racing greyhounds, or a racetrack, or any other conflict of interest within the racing industry. Furthermore, such employees shall have no investments in any racetrack nor receive any remuneration from a racetrack association, nor own or lease a racehorse or racing greyhound that is racing in the State of Texas. The incumbent may be required to consent to a background investigation through by the Texas Department of Public Safety including, but not limited to, fingerprinting of all TVMDL staff involved in drug testing for livestock and race animals.
Required: - High School graduation or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment.
- Ensure attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred: - Bachelor's degree in biomedical science, animal science, microbiology, or a related discipline with laboratory/lecture coursework in microbiology.
- Experience in a laboratory, veterinary clinic, or other animal-related occupation (e.g., 4H, FFA, industry, etc.).
- Experience providing customer service to internal or external clients.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
- Knowledge of basic scientific/veterinary/medical terminology.
- Skilled in use of laboratory and computer equipment, performing repetitive tasks efficiently and accurately, and accurate recordkeeping.
- Ability to ensure attention to detail, work well in a team, communicate with colleagues and clients, prioritize tasks, and manage competing responsibilities, stay organized, able to work with animal tissues and bodily fluids, maintain focus under pressure, and meet deadlines.
