Position Summary: The dental sterilization technician will work closely with the dental team by providing supportive services, meaning services related to clinical functions in direct relationship to treating patients. Dental sterilization technician duties are a subset of dental assistant supportive services, as specified in the Washington State Regulations (WAC 246-817-520). Dental sterilization technicians participate in the SIHB dental assistant training program to become chairside dental assistants at SIHB.
Organizational Structure/Reporting Relationships: This position reports to the Dental Assistant Trainer and is a member of the dental team. This position has no direct reports.

Job Responsibilities - Available and reliable for support services and patient care. On time for scheduled shifts and able to work with a variety of dentists and team members.
- Professional communication and teamwork. Candidate is courteous and always maintains professional communication with co-workers and patients. Works as a member of a team, assists others and readily orients new and temporary staff.
- Completes non-patient tasks during slow work hours.
- Sterilizing, cleaning, and maintaining instruments and equipment; maintain current knowledge of OSHA infection control regulations. Ensures operatories and dental spaces are clean, well-stocked, and functioning. Alerts supervisor appropriately if maintenance or repairs are necessary.
- Participating in continuous dental quality improvement activities, which may include monitoring and evaluation functions.
- Participates in the SIHB dental assistant training program
- Comply with federal and state guidelines, internal dental policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including those related to reducing the spread of COVID-19.
- Other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required: - High school diploma/GED.
- Positive interpersonal relationship skills required.
- Must maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
Preferred: - Experience working with American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
- Experience working with underserved populations.
- Familiarity with the health and social issues facing the American Indian/ Alaska Native population and a desire to serve this population.
- Exceptional customer service.
- Strong computer skills.
Work Environment: SIHB is staffed Monday through Friday from 7am-6pm, with every other Saturday for Pediatric Clinic. Dental sterilization technician hours are 8am - 5pm with a 1-hour lunch break. Dental sterilization technicians staff the International District Clinic and may be asked to staff the Mobile Dental Clinic at various locations.
