Position Title: Director, Government Relations & Global Development
Department: Special Olympics Latin America
Reports to: President and Managing Director
Salary: $65,722
Position Summary: Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with government officials and international organizations to position Special Olympics as a thought leader and partner on the global stage for all policy, research, and social progress related to individuals with intellectual disability. This role also involves identifying and securing funding opportunities from these relationships to drive sustainable development initiatives and championing Special Olympics programs in the region. The director will work closely with local and international partners to advance the mission of Special Olympics in Latin America and ensure the organization's success in the global arena.
Adept at navigating complex regulatory landscapes and collaborating with diverse stakeholders to amplify the organization's social impact. Passionate about leveraging resources to drive positive change and foster community development throughout Latin America.
Primary Responsibilities: - Develop and implement a comprehensive government relations strategy to advance the mission and goals of Special Olympics Latin America.
- Build or strengthen relationships with key government officials, agencies, and stakeholders to advocate for policies and funding that support the organization's programs and initiatives in the region.
- Develop and implement a partnership development strategy: With colleagues and Special Olympics national Program staff, develop and execute plans to initiate and/or deepen relationships with national governments and global development entities in support of Special Olympics Programs that intersect with government policies. This includes developing outreach plans, coordinating meetings and events, and developing partnership proposals for national government partnerships, activation of UN partnerships, and multilateral partnership development cross-sector.
- Resource Development and Capacity Building: With colleagues, develop outreach materials demonstrating the value of SO inclusive programming in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and dominant global development objectives to increase programming in SO programming platforms. Collaborate with colleagues in Organizational Development to build capacity of Special Olympics Programs to engage with international development actors on the national level.
- Support and lead Government Relations Priorities in the region: Primarily education, sports and health policies and appropriations work, event planning & logistics, internal and external policy events, thought leaders & Honored Guest management at major organization´s events in Latin America.
- Support the management of the Global Coalition of Governments in the region: developing documentation for candidate countries, such as briefing materials, background information, and presentation materials. Preparing Regional leadership for presentations and pitches. Follow up to the governments implementing projects.
- Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments that may impact Special Olympics Latin America and its constituents, and develop strategies to address them.
- Provide key support and work with the President and Managing Director to represent Special Olympics Latin America in meetings, hearings, and other forums with government officials and policymakers to advocate for the organization's priorities.
- Track and report on key metrics and outcomes related to government relations and global development efforts, and contribute to organizational reporting and communications.
Required Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) and 5-10 years of experience ideally including government relations, managing large projects, and grant/policy writing.
- Exceptional organizational, writing, communication, research, and diplomacy skills.
- Knowledge of and interest in government relations, policy, the ID community and related current events and advocacy priorities of current thought leaders.
- Experience with public speaking, presenting, or facilitating communication.
- Willingness to travel
- Capable of working independently to shape and design a new project, as well as to incorporate feedback from multiple stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with individuals from a range of cultures and professional and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to exercise a high level of attention to detail and to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and competing priorities.
- Willingness to investigate challenges and solve critical issues creatively.
