Position description The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for Specialists in the Shive Lab, in the area of fuels and fire ecology.
Dr. Kristen Shive (PI), an Assistant Cooperative Extension Specialist with the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management (ESPM) within the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking highly motivated individuals for the positions of Assistant or Associate Specialists.
In line with the goals of the UC Cooperative Extension program, the Shive Lab seeks to answer research questions that can directly support forest managers and private citizens in adapting to increasing wildfire activity in forested ecosystems. To ensure our work is relevant to forest management, our research questions are developed in cooperation with forest managers, policy makers and other scientists, and we use a combination of robust, quantitative field studies and spatial analyses to address them. We also then extend our research to practitioners in the form of research briefs, reports and workshops. This position will contribute to all of these endeavors on a variety of projects. Our current projects include:
- The success of postfire conifer planting in severely burned giant sequoia groves, relative to site conditions and competing vegetation
- The impact of fuels treatments in giant sequoia groves
- The state of fuels, regeneration and forest structure in multiple sequoia groves to support grove-specific management plans
- The rates of postfire fuel accumulation in mixed conifer forests through the state
- Improving guidance for postfire management in coastal forests Specific responsibilities include:
- Providing leadership on administrative and logistical needs for project implementation.
- Managing field data collection in burned and unburned forests in the central and southern Sierra Nevada.
- Assisting with the development, management, and analysis of forest science data. This assistance will entail database development, quality control and quality assurance checks, and statistical analysis of key metrics, and may entail data entry if needed.
- Working directly with federal and state agency partners to implement field work.
- Coordinating forest managers, scientists, and policy makers to facilitate collaborative projects.
- Contributing to the planning, analysis, and writing of peer reviewed manuscripts and final reports. These contributions may include: drafting figures and tables; analyzing data; writing, editing and/or proof-reading text; compiling references.
- Contributing to presentations, as well as assisting with planning and facilitating workshops.
