Job description
The Director, Indirect Tax role is responsible for leading and managing the Indirect Tax Team in all aspect of Indirect Tax to ensure that Quest is complying in its sales & use, property (real & personal) and various excise/gross receipts liabilities. This role will d evelop and implement strategic initiatives to enhance processes and tax savings on all indirect tax matters.
Accountable for:
- Ensuring compliance is done timely and accurately, audit defense is handled strategically, process improvement projects continue, leading the indirect analysis around any M&A work, and ensuring all refunds are secured in timely and cost-efficient manner
- Guaranteeing all controls and reconciliations are completed and resolved each month
- Mentoring and developing a team of associates to ensure they meet their goals and have opportunity for growth (currently seven associates)
- Assisting VP of Tax with preparing and presenting executive report outs for senior management
- Reporting out on key transactions to CFO and FLT with VP of Tax
- Ensuring that the Quest Way: Strategy, Purpose & Culture (five Cs) are applied to the Indirect Tax Function
- Individual must not only stay current on federal, state, and local tax laws which impact Indirect Tax filings but also be able to synthesize that knowledge into tangible savings and reduction of exposure
- Develop and drive overall strategy for indirect tax – including planning and process improvement
- Individual must effectively and strategically manage third parties (contracts, payments, and deliverables) that support Indirect Tax to ensure Quest is receiving the most cost/benefit ratio on the outside spend
- Review all material indirect tax returns and payments. Oversight of approximately 10,000 payments and returns annually
- Ability to delegate non-value add work is essential
- Ensure all returns are filed timely
- Review and drive reconciliations, control charts, Black Line, and Journal entries for Indirect Tax liabilities
- Ensure all SOPs are up to date and processes are efficient and steps are value – add
- Lead and drive process improvement mindset in the department. Ensure all team members are completing the automation efforts for various tax processes
- Must have an executive understanding of key functions in an organization such as accounts payable, fixed assets and corporate accounting
- Manage Indirect Tax Audits (internal including SOX and external) to ensure fair and equitable resolution
- Lead Indirect Tax integration for acquisitions
- Drive tax planning through research on potential tax savings opportunities and presenting to senior Tax Management
- Manage the preparation of annual 1042 and 1042S statements for IRS; W-8BEN-E review
- Work with Quest IT on Upgrades and business solutions impacting the Indirect Tax function, primarily PeopleSoft/Vertex
- Assist Corporate Accounts Payable with federal and state withholding on payments as required by law
- Support Quest business partners in transactional tax matters, including training, and contract review as required. Demonstrate ability to relay complex tax concepts in a succinct way so that non-Tax partners can understand
- Support overall Corporate Tax Function and its senior management team
- Ability to make the complex simple and present complicated tax matters in an executive summary
Required Work Experience:
- Supervisory experience
- 12-15 years’ experience in transactional tax with multi-state, multi-legal entity large organization(s)
P referred Work Experience:
- Experience working in an ERP environment with multiple software packages, especially PeopleSoft, Vertex and PTMS
- Experience with Vertex a plus
- Direct experience with Lean Six Sigma projects a plus
- Real Estate Assessment experience is a plus
Skills:
- Data Base acumen
- Tax Software knowledge
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree (required)
Master’s Degree and CPA (preferred)
