POSITION SUMMARY: : Under general supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, the Inpatient Pharmacy Manager is responsible for managing pharmacy operations. This includes supervision and training of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, inventory management, quality assurance, implementation and enforcement of policies, procedures, process guidelines, and protocols. Promotes the safe and effective use of medications for all patients of the hospital, ensuring compliance with clinical practice standards. Provides timely, accurate, and adequate drug information to other health care providers.  Maintains and reviews patient profiles and makes recommendations to providers to ensure appropriateness of therapy, avoids drug interactions and adverse reactions. Ensures pharmacy is in compliance with USP <797>/<800> standards for compounding sterile pharmaceuticals.  Ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory standards, federal and state laws. Assists Director and Co-Director(s) in maintaining the Pharmacy Residency Program. Preceptor of residents and/or pharmacy students.  Assists with staffing inpatient pharmacy one day a week or as needed. Completes other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy required.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Licensure by New Mexico Board of Pharmacy is required, and must be active and in good standing. Continuing education to maintain licensure and certification(s), if any, is required.

SKILLS: Demonstrates skills and abilities in assessment/evaluation, decision-making, time management, human relations, and conflict resolution. Strong organizational, problem-solving and customer service skills. Must have effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers and support personnel. Ability to identify, resolve, and mitigate pharmacy operational or program problems. Requires the ability to speak, listen, develop and communicate written materials. Ability to work with medical and nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.  

EXPERIENCE: Five years of pharmacist experience and experience in related field. Three to five years progressing management experience. ASHP residency preceptor status.

NATURE OF SUPERVISION: 

-Responsible to: Director of Pharmacy

ENVIRONMENT:

- Bloodborne pathogen :  B Occasional exposure in daily duties.  Little expected risk, but may be exposed unexpectedly to potentially infectious materials.  Exposure may be superficial and limited to a small amount of fluid. Possible exposure to patients with infectious diseases. Close quarters in a busy environment. Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals and allergenic drug products.  Extended exposure to video display terminals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work at a rapid pace throughout entire shift, while under demanding workloads and stressful situations.  Hearing sufficient to use telephones and vision sufficient to read physician orders, requisitions and reports.  Hand to eye coordination sufficient for aseptic technique. Subject to stressful professional relationships.
