Job description
Position: BU Machinery Development Technician
Shift: First Shift (7:00 am - 4:00 pm) with flexibility to work overtime when needed.
Travel: High Frequency-75%
Pay Rate : $29.69 - $42.15 (Senior) depends on education/experience
Location : North Region (ideally will sit at Neenah, Tiffin, Cincinnati or Robesonia plant)
While reporting to the Regional Field Engineer , as the BU Machinery Development Technician , you will be responsible for performing maintenance tasks, project assignments, specifically proactive tasks that are necessary to provide high quality, efficient work to meet Sonoco standards.

Requirements of the job:
- Position requires working any, and all shifts including weekend and holiday work as dictated by the schedule of assigned projects
- Extensive travel is required, as much as 75%, to PPD branch plants, machinery builders, and customer locations as required by project assignments
- Responsible for planning and tracking the execution of assigned projects
- Responsible for developing and documenting project details such as wiring diagrams, machine modifications, drawings, quotes, BOM’s , parts ordering
- Provides required training to plant personnel after completion of project
- Maintain close contact with Regional Engineer and others to efficiently coordinate jobs and utilize available manpower
- Assist with remote troubleshooting over the network or over the phone
- Good communications skills both oral and written, including computers skills such as Excel, Word and Power Point
- Develop new applications and apply new technologies
- Maintain and develop relationships with contractors and suppliers for projects
Education, Experience, and skills:
- Engineering degree is a plus
- Experience, six to 10 years, related to machine maintenance, machine development, equipment upgrades and new equipment installation projects
- Failure Mode Analysis, Analytical Troubleshooting and Predictive Maintenance
- Strong mechanical aptitude and skills, such as fabrication, machining, assembly, troubleshooting and repair. Cutting, welding, and use of hand tools
- Read and create low voltage wiring diagrams
- Extensive knowledge and experience in panel building
- Extensive working knowledge and experience with AC Drives and Motors, including vector drives and high-end AC inverters
- Knowledge and experience in pneumatic and hydraulic systems, process instrumentation, and control.
- Extensive working knowledge and experience with Allen Bradley PLC systems including:
- Micrologix, RSlogix, Compactlogix.
- RS 500, RS5000, Factory Talk View, RS Linx, Drive Executive, Panel Builder, Connected Components
- Ability to communicate with and create / edit PLC programs, troubleshoot programs, including Ethernet, DeviceNet, and ControlNet
- Servo motion controllers
- Other platforms include EasyBuilder Pro (Weintek) and other manufacturers
- Good communications skills both oral and written, including computers skills such as Excel, Word and Power Point
- Experience with AutoCad and or Solidworks for plant layout and details drawings
