Job description

The Graduate Career Counselor will provide a broad range of services for the Graduate College's Office of Graduate Success with emphasis on graduate student career development; conducting individual meetings to provide feedback on student professional development process and materials; delivering presentations related to professional development, the job search process, career materials; collecting, managing, and analyzing outcomes data.

This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process.

Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location .

Specific Job Duties and Tasks

• Support students by meeting individually to discuss feedback on job application materials and strategies to prepare for a job search, interview, or negotiation. Maintain records of student case load.
• Deliver presentations about career development materials, opportunities, and processes. Deliver similar presentations as requested by campus organizations (e.g., student groups, graduate courses, and graduate programs.
• Monitor email and to respond to inquiries about office services in a professional manner, refer inquiries to relevant specific office staff members, and/or refer to appropriate campus resources for inquiries.
• Compile, anonymize, organize, and maintain library of donated career materials (resumes, C.V.s, cover letters, etc.) for online access to current UI graduate students.
• Coordinate outcomes data efforts and reporting with department and program partners.
• May assist in supervision and training of postdoctoral scholars, interns, and/or graduate assistants.
• Develop, implement, evaluate, and/or recommend new services related to student professional development.

Education Required

• Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience providing a comparable level of expertise.

Required Qualifications

• Experience (typically one to three years) of graduate student advising around careers or professional development.
• Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in context of providing constructive developmental editing and writing feedback; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors at a working proficiency level is required.
• Working proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, web content management,
• Demonstrated working proficiency in the ability to work with variety of individuals and groups in a constructive manner while appreciating the unique contribution of diverse individuals is required.
• Driver's License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience and working proficiency in public speaking and/or teaching is desirable.
• Experience and working proficiency with graduate student programs and liaison is desirable.
• Experience or familiarity with graduate career support tools and platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, ImaginePhD, myIDP, Beyond the Professoriate) is desirable.
• Experience with supporting the needs of international students and other specialized populations.
• Some knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations is desirable.
• MA or PhD degree preferred.
