Job description

 

To inspire, connect and strengthen our community by enriching the lives of our children today, and expanding their capacity to shape their future.

 

Working under the supervision of the Dance Coordinator and the Museum Director, the Museum/Dance Educator will help design and implement curriculum and dance instruction for children age 3 to 18 years old. Working within a collaborative environment, duties include teaching and choreographing pieces for non-competitive beginning through advanced levels of ballet plus at least one of the following styles: modern, jazz, tap, and/or hip hop; teaching dance and non-dance summer camps; performing general Museum related activities, and assisting with special event programming including in house and community performances by the Family Museum Dance Company.

Experiences and Environments Requirements

1. Develops curriculum and lesson plans in keeping with the dance education goals, and mission of the Family Museum and The Family Museum Dance Program.
2. Effectively manages groups of 10 to 20 dance students.
3. Implements lesson plans, structured activities, and appropriate choreography and costuming.
4. Establishes and maintains positive relationships with children and parents.
5. Effectively collaborates with the dance team to produce small and large-scale learning and performing opportunities.
6. Provides hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences.
7. Maintains an organized, well-supplied, clean and safe learning environment.
8. Knows and practices safety standards and policies, and manages students accordingly.


NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. May serve on museum planning committees as expertise deems.
2. May participate in community groups related to museums and/or education.
3. May assist in the planning of special museum events as expertise deems. 

Education: Experience equivalent to the knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a BS or BA degree. Preference given to candidates with an understanding of early child development and/or early childhood education.

Experience: Minimum of one-year experience teaching dance in a performing arts/studio environment, instructing students ranging in age from preschool to high school and at various skill levels.

 

Interpersonal Skills: Must be exceptional in the ability to relate to children and parents; build a following of clients, and maintain rapport throughout extended public exposure. Must implement instruction under the guidelines of the Dance Coordinator, and Museum Director and within the values set forth in the Family Museum mission.

 

Physical Requirements: Ability to stand and stoop in order to effectively instruct children in groups for multiple consecutive hours. Ability to move equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires high energy levels and stamina.

 

Working Conditions: Work is performed in dance studios, Museum Great Hall, Exhibits, and occasionally at an outside venue, in the sight of the public, or in an off-site auditorium.

 

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday afternoon/evenings, may be required to work a split shift one day per week. Occasional weekends to accommodate special events.
