Explains, applies and removes holter monitors on in-patients and out-patients. Scans holter recordings providing ordering physicians with accurate documentation of a patient's cardiac rhythms. Reports critical results and significant arrhythmias to ordering physician/nursing units. Explains, applies, and removes ambulatory blood pressure monitors on out-patients. Scans ABP monitors and reports results to ordering physicians. Performs EKGS and assists in stress testing.

A day in the life of a Holter Scanning Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Checks the Epic system daily for out-patients and verifies in-patient holter orders. Explains the test to the patient. Utilizes patient safety goals when applying holter monitors by confirming patient's identity and reducing risk of healthcare associated infections.
2. Properly preps chest, applies electrodes and attaches a holter monitor to the patient; documents reason for requested test from physician's order, patient's medications and ordering physician on the holter report. Charges completed holter monitor test in computer. Scans holter monitors, interprets, identifies critical findings, documents arrhythmias and changes in cardiac rhythm.
3. Communicates critical results to physicians and Registered Nurses after performing a scan. Sends reports to the ordering physicians.
4. Identifies quality improvement issues and develops processes to address following the Plan Do Check Act method. Participate in the collection, analysis, and application of performance improvement data for follow up and resolution. Participates in system and interdepartmental quality improvement activities, especially work groups.
5. Records critical results in a log book. Complies with local, state and federal regulatory and accrediting standards.
6. Participates in continuing education, completing required e-learning, and attends required system programs annually. Maintains awareness of department issues by attending staff meetings and safety huddles.
7. Checks the Epic system for outpatient ABP orders. Explains the test to the patient. Utilizes patient safety goals when applying monitors by confirming the patient's identity and reducing risk of healthcare-associated infections. Set up a monitor with patient's information. Selects the proper size cuff for the patient's arm and applies the cuff. Attachs monitor and takes reading.
8. Reinforces the importance of diary recording and restrictions while wearing. Notes patient's cardiac medications in diary. Charges completed ABP monitors in the computer.
9. Remove the monitor. Uploads the report from the monitor. Prepares reports and sends them to ordering physicians.
10. Checks the Epic system daily for outpatient and inpatient Ekg orders. Responsible for performing Ekgs, electrode application and administrative tasks including test result and report documentation.
11. Assists in the stress lab. Preps the patient, applies leads, enters information into the computer system and assists the stress lab nurse as needed with testing.
12. Orders/maintains supplies for holter, ABP monitors and Ekg.. Contacts appropriate areas for any repairs needed and follows up until completion. Maintains/cleans equipment between patients. Ensures date and time settings are correct on monitors. Verifies monitors are programmed and ready for application.
13. Assists in the preparation of monthly reports/statistics on tests performed. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor/manager to assist in the efficient operation of the department.
14. Trains new technicians to apply, remove and/or scan holter/download ABP monitors. Orient to JFK UMC, department, and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with and assures staff compliance with established dress code and personal protection equipment requirements.
15. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
16. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Certification and/or successful completion of a cardiac arrhythmia detection course.
3. At least one year experience in an acute care hospital or clinical setting focusing on cardiac arrhythmia detection.
4. Excellent communication skills when working with patients, families, physicians and other healthcare team members.
5. Basic computer skills.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Holter scanning experience.

 

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

1. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
