Job description
Houston Harte Chair in Journalism
If you're passionate about data journalism, driven by innovation and excited about working with the next generation of data journalists, we have the perfect opportunity for you. The Missouri School of Journalism, home of NICAR and IRE, is taking applications for the next Houston Harte Chair in Journalism. This endowed position will be filled by someone who wants to take a leading role in reimagining what a data journalism program should offer now and for the future. We're looking for someone who can help us build on the strong foundation that Mizzou has had for more than 30 years. Data analysis and coding skills are important, but so is a desire to think creatively about the direction our data journalism program should take. We're looking for someone who is excited about working with some of the sharpest students in the world, and also collaborating with journalists at professional newsrooms in the Midwest and beyond. And we're looking for someone who is excited about working with other professors and school leaders on expanding our program's vision, and then executing that plan. This position involves teaching and working with student reporters on data projects. You'll also collaborate with researchers and fellows in our school and at the Reynolds Journalism Institute. The right candidate will have a mix of skills including some (but not all) of the following: experience using statistical (and other) software and writing code for data analysis and other newsroom projects; working collaboratively with reporters and editors on data projects; designing data visualizations; creating tools that help journalists and newsrooms better serve their audiences. Some previous teaching experience is a plus. The chair will collaborate with all of the outlets in our Missouri News Network: The Columbia Missourian, KBIA-FM (our NPR affiliate), KOMU (our NBC affiliate), Vox Magazine, Missouri Business Alert and our statewide news service. The position will fill the Houston Harte Chair in Journalism. Harte was a longtime leader and entrepreneur in U.S. journalism and co-founder of the Harte-Hanks newspaper group. This endowed chair comes with funds that its holder will use to work on projects and otherwise advance the school's data program. Minimum qualifications: A bachelor's degree.Job tags
