Assoc. Project Scientist - CERF Research Program Position Overview: A reasonable estimate for this position is $87,000.00 - $112,000.00.00 for Assoc. Project Scientist
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidate will serve as lead researcher for the the North State Community Economic Resilience Fund (CERF)
Project within the Environment and Climate Justice Hub in the Institute of the Environment, and in collaboration with
Partners including the Sierra Institute for Community and Environment. Major responsibilities include planning and
development of the North State CERF research program, including assessment of partner and constituency needs,
and developing and implementing collaborative research with funder (Sierra Institute) and other partners (state
and local agencies).
I. RESEARCH (95%)
Research activity (85%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating the environmental and climate justice priorities to be incorporated in North State community economic development planning. The candidate will lead implementation of research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator and partner organizations (i.e., Sierra Institute). He/she will design specific case studies, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. The candidate will coordinate with other staff, including part-time CERF research administrator and Environmental Management program staff, to support student research contributions, but the candidate will not be responsible for mentoring students. Candidate will lead the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up research.
Specific research activities the candidate will engage in include:
- Developing a set of recommendations for regional economic development projects to include and prioritize environmental justice, to be shared with and adopted by the North State High Road Transition Collaborative.
- Conducting 2-3 case studies of regional environmental justice issues to be included the North State Regional Plan.
- Participating in regional capacity assessment workshops and economic development listening session workshops as needed.
- Contributing to workforce and economic development assessments for identified communities within the North State region.
- Developing opportunities to strategically and beneficially link research and analysis tools based at UC Davis for community benefit in the north state (i.e., analysis of soils/ water for contamination, development of local contamination detection tools, development of tailored, downscaled climate projections, etc.)
- Contributing to write ups of rural and tribal capacity, workforce and economic development assessments conducted in identified communities
Publication (5%)
The candidate will collaborate to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team.
Grant Acquisition (5%)
The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate may assist in fundraising to continue this work beyond the initial 2023-2024 funding period.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (2.5%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.
When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions. (2%)
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (2.5%)
(This category is encouraged but not required. It may be included or omitted at the option of the individual department or other unit. If included, it will be considered a clear expectation for the position, and the candidate will be given due credit for these activities during the review process.)
The candidate will engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies.
The candidate will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position.

Ph.D. in geography, rural sociology, environmental policy, or a related field, with a research background in rural environmental justice. Candidates should have experience working in rural communities, Native/Indigenous communities, qualitative methods, and a basic understanding of California natural resources policy, particularly as applied in the rural north state.
