Bargaining Unit Position: Cannabis Union Organizer
Starting Salary: $50,000 per year plus Union paid benefits
UFCW Local 1445 in Dedham, MA is looking for a qualified candidate to fill this open position:
The UFCW Local 1445 believes that while some organizing skills can—and will—be taught, potential candidates must have some already-existing skills. Candidates must be effective communicators with an ability to show compassion for fellow workers and eagerness to connect with cannabis workers from different parts of the industry and guide them toward unionizing their workplace.
QUALITIES
- Must own a vehicle and have a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work a 40 hour work plus week with varying schedules. There will be the expectation to work mornings, evenings and weekends;
- Self-starter and demonstrate a clear understanding of union/worker power
- Demonstrated ability to understand the ever-changing cannabis industry or an ability to learn;
- Comfortability speaking with workers about workplace issues and asking people hard/difficult questions relating to their work;
- Comfortability approaching people you do not know at their workplaces or at their homes;
- Ability to take notes and track daily/weekly work on local union’s reporting system.
- Familiarity with text messaging via phone and via apps (Signal, Discord, WhatsApp) or the demonstrated ability to learn quickly;
- Comfortability with hosting video calls (Zoom, GoogleMeet, Microsoft Teams); when needed.
- Ability to lead small group meetings in person or virtually;
- Ability to sit, stand, drive and walk for long periods of time;
- Ability to attend rallies, demonstrations and carry signs, megaphones flyers and other materials and equipment needed.
- Ability to manage stress and work on multiple projects simultaneously;
- Ability to manage their personal schedule to make meetings and calls on time as well as submit reports on time;
- Familiarity with social media platforms, Microsoft Word, Excel or Google Docs;
- To design and implement organizing goals for Local 1445, including leadership identification and development
- To recruit and retain organizing committee members and volunteer organizers.
- To lead these campaigns, including mobilizing support among community partners, labor, and media.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and manage Organizing Campaigns
- Work with staff to coordinate all aspects of the campaign, including vision, strategy, timelines, communication, community outreach, and politics
- Coordinate and direct campaign mobilization
- Develop and implement programs during the campaign for skills development
- Ability to take initiative and work independently while showing a high level of judgment.
- Oversee of the campaign database, lists and authorization cards.
- Assist with development and monitor the campaign under the direction of the Organizing Director.
- Perform other duties as required by the union.
Supervision:
- Must be able to act and organize time independently.
- Must work with elected leaders, worker leaders and staff in complex situations.
- Will coordinate work with the Local’s Organizing Director, President and Secretary-Treasurer and International Union coordinator.
An ideal candidate would have:
- 1-3 years of work in union organizing and/or community organizing. If not, training will be provided.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and leading organizing campaigns
- Previous experience with the labor movement or other advocacy organization is a plus.
- Excellent writing, verbal and analytical communication skills
- Thorough knowledge of organizing campaigns strategies
- Knowledge of organizing campaign database management tools
- Skills in the use of apple products and systems
- Ability to write and proofread campaign communication materials
- Ability to perform basic research
- Building one-on-one relationships with workers and
- Identifying and developing leaders to guide and lead campaigns.
- Evaluate workers by conducting individual/group meetings to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
- Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take action by organizing their workplace.
- Engaging workers in broader union efforts to bring pressure to bear on industry sectors.
- Coordinating with workers to gather information that is useful in identifying opportunities for membership growth and mobilization.
- Other duties as assigned but not limited to membership, community support, political involvement and supporting other departments in the Local Union.
