The current base salary range for this position is $71,500 to $147,600. 'Off-scale' salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description The Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist in the Kammen Lab, for the CoolClimate Network (CCN), a research program of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at UC Berkeley.
Established in 2007, CoolClimate's mission is to scale up the adoption of low-carbon technologies and practices through smart decision-making tools, transformational programs and enabling policies. CCN develops cutting-edge carbon footprint benchmarking research and combines this with practical application of behavioral sciences to design tailored climate solutions to different populations. CoolClimate tools quickly identify the unique opportunities each individual, business, organization or community holds to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These tools are incorporated into programs to activate, educate, motivate and empower individuals, organizations and communities to make low-carbon choices. CoolClimate also works with consortium members to design policies and programs that meet local needs and motivate populations to take climate action.
The successful candidate will serve as Program Director of the CoolClimate Network, working under the supervision of Professor Daniel Kammen, Professor of Energy in the Energy and Resources Group, Goldman School of Public Policy, and Department of Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley. The incumbent will collaborate with Prof. Kammen and co-investigators to lead CoolClimate Network research, software development, programs and outreach activities.
Duties include writing and managing research grants, conducting quantitative and statistical analysis, designing and developing carbon and resource management software, training and overseeing students, staff and post-doctoral researchers, collaborating with CCN members to align tools with needs of members, developing work plans and timelines to ensure that deliverables are completed on schedule, authoring research papers using CCN data and disseminating findings to academics, donors and policymakers through meetings and presentations.
The primary work activities include:
- developing territorial and consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions inventories and forecasting models,
- managing the development carbon footprint reduction software for households, businesses and communities,
- design, implementation and evaluation of energy and greenhouse gas reduction programs, such as the Cool Campus Challenge,
- serving as Program Chair of the Behavior, Energy and Climate Change Conference. Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) Preferred qualifications
- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Quantitative Environmental Research or related field
- Demonstrated multi-disciplinary background, combining competencies in Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Social Science (Psychology, Economics, Sociology) and Public Policy
- 3-5 years experience conducting empirical research including supervising data collection, cleaning, and publication activities
- 3-5 years experience and competency with statistical software packages such as SPSS, STATA and R, and ability to render accurate statistical analysis
- Understanding of key issues related to behavior, design and sustainability
- Understanding of database and software languages, particularly MySQL, PHP, Javascript and HTML5
- Experience designing and implementing data collection instruments
- Ability to independently investigate solutions to technical and administrative problems
- Ability to meet and discuss project objectives with academics, policymakers and donors
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific findings into accessible, non-technical language (via publications or professional presentations
- Ability to work well with teams, and communicate effectively with colleagues and faculty
- Experience translating complex material/research to broad, non-technical audiences
- Familiarity with application programming interfaces
- Specialization in applied econometrics, research design and program evaluation
- Ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, while remaining flexible, proactive, tactful, resourceful and efficient, and with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality Application Requirements Document requirements
