JOB TITLE: BPS Retention Assistant

OFFICE: Office of Retention, Cultivation, and Diversity Programs

TEAM: Retention

The Office of Retention, Cultivation & Diversity Programs (RCD) is committed to recruiting, hiring, developing, and retaining a racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse group of highly effective and culturally proficient teachers and staff members every year. We continue to focus our efforts on three key “levers” for human capital reform: 1) Recruit & Cultivate, 2) Hire Early, and 3) Develop and Retain. These levers remain at the center of our strategy for accelerating student learning.

Position Overview

The BPS Retention Team is seeking skilled and dedicated district educators to aid the BPS Retention efforts, promoting the district in an inspiring and realistic way, and emphasizing the district's commitment to diversity. With our city and schools growing more diverse and vibrant, it is our top priority to ensure that we have the best educators in every classroom for our students. We are also committed to increasing the diversity among our educators, as research shows that a diverse workforce is linked directly to closing the achievement gap of students. A crucial part of this work is identifying and retaining the provisional educators, especially ones of color. The purpose of BPS Retention Assistant will be to support the Director of Recruitment and the Retention Specialist in developing and implementing strategies to retain educators of color in BPS. Retention Aids will work collaboratively with the Retention Team, school staff, district leaders and the local community to promote an equitable, inclusive and supportive work environment. Retention Aids will also help in district-wide retention and cultivation events such as Early Hiring Pool pre-screening for both Academic and Academic Support pools, teacher career fairs, interview/ demo lesson workshops, networking and informational events, webinars, panels, one on one or small group workshops in order to build community and cultivate future educators for Boston Public Schools.

Key Responsibilities - All Retention Assistant

Support/Advocacy:

Learn to serve as an Ambassador of BPS Retention and act as a liaison between candidates and the district, and as a mentor to potential BPS educators; become acquainted with RCD supports and resources to share with candidates Work closely with educators to identify challenges and barriers to retention, propose solutions Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure hiring practices are inclusive and equitable Participate in Retention events and initiatives to attract educators of color. Support the creation of mentoring and support networks for educators of color. Promote open and respectful dialogue about race, diversity, and inclusion within the school district. From the list of provisional EOC’s maintain correspondence with and support educators working in schools within your assigned region

Data Collection:

Send exit surveys to anyone leaving the district Collect, analyze and interpret data on teacher retention and satisfaction to inform strategic planning.

Networking/Cultivating :

Communications/Social media: post our videos, information about events and supports to provide consistent communication across all platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Workplace, LinkedIn; articles pertinent to our work, highlight our work, events; Share information via personal and professional networks Support partnership development through community-based cultivation events across the greater Boston area to build a network of potential future educators for BPS Reach out to assigned candidates identified by the Retention Team via email, zoom and phone Optional: contribute to newsletter, friday flier; update Constant Contact per schedule we provide; Create flyers for social media pages.

Administration:

Track your time and activities - Document the status of all work and hours worked Respond to/ follow up on inquiries through the retention email as requested by Director of Recruitment & Retention Specialist Assist in the development and implementation of retention strategies for educators of color

Training to obtain:

Training in diversity, equity and inclusion practices

Timeline

Mandatory orientation (virtual) : Tentatively Nov. 9th

Hours/Compensation

10 Positions $2,500 flat stipend paid at the April/May 2024

Required Qualifications

Currently active BPS Teacher, Social Worker, Guidance Counselor, Paraprofessional, Family Liaisons/Partners, Community Field Coordinators, School Librarian, School Based Managerial, Central Office Managerial, etc. Strong time management skills Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Proficient in the use of microsoft and google applications Understanding of unique challenges faced by educators of color Strong cultural proficiency, professional reflection and collaboration skills Strong commitment to a diverse educator workforce in BPS
