Job Summary
Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Wellness Coach is responsible for providing instruction on strength training and cardiovascular equipment that significantly contributes to each member’s health and fitness goals. The Wellness Coach will perform components of fitness evaluations and assist members in setting and accomplishing fitness goals. The Wellness Coach will instruct various wellness education classes. The Wellness Coach will maintain cleanliness and upkeep of the Wellness Center and exercise equipment.
Job Responsibilities
- Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
- Ensure a safe and risk-free environment at all times while meeting the individual needs of the participants
- Conduct wellness evaluation and program recommendations for all new members
- Conduct fitness evaluations (e.g., step test, flexibility, resting heart rate, blood pressure, and heart rate) following the Y’s way to physical fitness protocol; use information from evaluations to help members set and reach their fitness/wellness goals; perform follow up testing to ensure goals are being met
- Design individualized cardiovascular and strength training programs for members
- Maintain the Wellness Center equipment to the highest level of efficiency and keep the Wellness Center clean
- Monitor Wellness Center; communicate with members offering suggestions to enhance member workouts, correct bad form, and provide spots; provide equipment and strength training orientations
- Check the appointment book and initial your appointments at the beginning of the shift; meet appointment at the check-in desk
- Keep accurate records of member interest and preferred fitness activities; schedule follow-up appointments with members to ensure they are getting the most out of their YMCA membership
- Offer creative ideas and changes to the Wellness Director to constantly monitor and improve the YMCA Wellness program
- Keep all certifications current
- Build relationships and interact with members
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions
Qualifications
- Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
- An enthusiastic personality with the desire to serve members, volunteers, guests, participants, and staff to create a culture of service within our Centers
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
- Must present a professional image possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
- Minimum 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Exercise Science degree preferred
- Experience in fitness testing and exercise programming and/or successful completion of college coursework in Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Fitness Testing, and Kinesiology preferred
Certifications Required:
- Before the start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
- Within 30 days of hire: CPR Pro/First Aid/AED
- Within 90 days of hire: Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, Foundations of Listen First, Principles of Member Health and Wellness, Wellness Center at the Y, Foundations of Strength and Conditioning at the Y
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
