Job description
Reports To: Superintendent / Assistant Superintendent/ Director of Golf Course Maintenance/
General Manager
Working Hours: Saturday to Sunday and holidays, 40 hrs. per week
Your safety and the safety of others is the most important part of each employee's
job. There is no task that is more important than ensuring that the task is done with "SAFETY
FIRST" in mind.
All employees are to wear shoes that cover the toes and entire foot up to the ankle (NO SANDLES
ETC) at all times, and dress in uniforms provided (after 60 days continuous employment) while on
club property.
As a 1st level Greensman, there are many duties you will perform that are essential to providing the members of Suntree Country Club with the best-golfing conditions possible. The members of Suntree Country Club are here because we have the reputation of being a great place for sport and recreation, provided by a staff that is courteous and professional. Listed below are the general guidelines for tasks that you will be trained to perform. If your task requires the use of a motorized vehicle you MUST check the engine oil level in the vehicle prior to starting the vehicle. Your supervisors or one of the mechanics will train you as to the location and proper levels of the oil "dipsticks" for each vehicle you will use. ALL equipment must be washed clean when you are done with it for the day unless otherwise instructed by your supervisor!
1. Bunker raking- Bunkers, or "sand traps", are to be left smooth and free of
footprints, debris, animal tracks, or any condition that may lead to a player's golf ball being in
an unfair position. If you are driving the bunker raking machine you are to have both hands on the
steering wheel and both feet on the foot platforms at all times while in motion. After exiting the bunker, you are to examine the bunker for irregularities left behind by the machine. Any extra sand that has been tracked out by the machine is to be dispersed into the turf so as to leave a clean, professional look. Your supervisor will inform you as to which course you will be assigned to, and in what order you are to proceed in relation to the golf holes.
2. Utility cart operation - If your assigned task requires the use of a utility cart for
transportation you MUST follow these guidelines. Keep all hands and feet inside the cart at all times while in motion. Reckless driving and "horseplay" on any piece of equipment may be grounds for immediate termination of employment. Being aware of
golfers and their position on the course is extremely important. Failure to know when a
golfer is hitting a shot and in which direction they are hitting it could result in getting struck
by the golf ball and causing injury. Proper etiquette is essential so as not to disturb golfers
during their rounds by not paying attention to their situation. When driving the vehicle on one
of the public streets you must obey traffic laws at all times (Police officers will
ticket you if you do not stop at a stop sign).
3. String trimmer operation (weed-eating) - Certain areas on the course require a string
trimmer to be used to cut the turf, i.e. lake banks and bulkhead/bridge interfaces. While using a
string trimmer you MUST wear eye protection at all times. Be aware of the locations of people in
your vicinity as debris from a string trimmer can fly a great distance. If someone is too close to
you cease operation until the area is clear. Pay particular attention to golfers in the area as the
noise of the string trimmer is very distracting.
4. Course set-up - Course set-up involves moving the tee marker locations,
emptying the trash receptacles at each tee, and changing out the water coolers at each cooler
station on the particular course to which you are assigned. Tee markers are to be at least 5 paces
apart, set perpendicular to the target fairway, and placed according to the day's pin location
sheet. The turf on and around the tee is to be made clean of any debris such as cigarette butts and
golf tees. The turf between the tee markers shall show no signs of excess wear. You shall bring a
large trash can with you from the maintenance shop for emptying the small tee trash cans at each
tee box area on your assigned course. Trash picked up shall be dumped in the large dumpster located in the maintenance area lot. You will be instructed as to where and how to fill the water coolers to be taken onto the courses. The keys to unlock the course cooler stations are located in the maintenance shop break room. These coolers are very heavy when full, and shall lift with care from location to location keeping your back straight during the lifting procedure, bending at the knees when necessary.
5. Other general tasks - Digging, edging, raking debris, and trimming hedges or trees are
other common tasks that you may perform during your shift. Your supervisor shall instruct
you on the particular details involving each task. If any aspect of the particular duty is unclear
to you, it is your responsibility to ask a supervisor for the correct process, do not "guess" what
you are supposed to do in a particular situation.
6. "Team Concept" Producing exceptional golf course conditions requires
teamwork. No matter what the task, they are all important and should be treated with
the utmost professionalism on a daily basis. Respect for coworkers and members is an
essential part of your job. Courtesy, honesty, and professionalism will be
required from you to maintain your employment at Suntree Country Club.
7. Willing to adhere to policies/procedures assigned by the Safety Committee.
8. Must comply with the rules and regulations as stated in the employee
handbook.
9. Perform all other duties and special projects assigned by the Director of Golf Course
Maintenance &/or General Manager.
A pleasant and outgoing personality is essential to this position. You must possess the
ability to communicate with a wide variety of people. You must possess good judgment and
decision-making abilities. You must present a neat appearance and wear the appropriate uniform for
this position.
