Position Overview: SLA is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to join our team as the Associate Director of Communications. This role comes with an exciting advancement track, offering the opportunity to progress into the position of Director of Communications. We are placing paramount importance on finding a candidate with exceptional writing skills, as they will play a central role in crafting and delivering impactful messages to diverse stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic Communication: Develop and execute a strategic communication plan to effectively convey SLA's objectives, initiatives, and industry updates to various audiences, including members, regulators, and the public.
- Media Relations: Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and industry influencers to secure positive coverage and manage responses to inquiries.
- Content Development: Create compelling and informative content, including press releases, articles, blog posts, and social media updates, to showcase SLA's achievements, thought leadership, and industry advancements.
- Digital Presence: Oversee and enhance SLA's digital presence, including the website and social media platforms, to ensure consistent and engaging communication with members and the broader community.
- Event Communication: Collaborate with the events team to develop communication strategies for conferences, seminars, and industry events, ensuring a cohesive and impactful presence.
- Internal Communication: Facilitate effective internal communication to ensure all staff members are informed and aligned with SLA's goals and activities.
- Crisis Communication: Develop and implement crisis communication plans, providing timely and transparent communication during challenging situations.
- Research and Historical Content Creation: Conduct research on industry-related historical events, the history of the association, and other relevant topics. Create compelling content that weaves historical context into current narratives to enhance SLA's storytelling.
- Live Interview Skills: Demonstrate the ability to conduct live interviews with stakeholders, both on and off-camera, to capture authentic and engaging narratives.
- Team Leadership (Future): Display a willingness and potential to lead a team in the future, fostering collaboration, mentoring team members, and contributing to a positive and productive work environment.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including membership, education, and regulatory affairs, to align communication efforts with organizational goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, with a focus on the insurance or financial industry preferred.
- Exceptional Writing Skills: Proven ability to craft clear, compelling, and articulate written communications.
- Strong editing and verbal communication skills.
- Proven experience in media relations, crisis communication, and digital marketing.
- Familiarity with surplus line insurance and regulatory environments is a plus.
- Web Development Experience: Preferred experience in web development for effective management of digital communication platforms.
- Salesforce Experience: Preferred proficiency in Salesforce for streamlined communication and data management.
- Media Monitoring Tools: Preferred familiarity with media monitoring tools for strategic insight into industry trends and coverage.
- Live Interview Skills: Ability to conduct engaging live interviews with stakeholders on and off-camera.
- Travel: The position may require occasional travel for conferences, events, and meetings.

Appointed by the Commissioner in 1994, the Association serves as the statutory surplus line advisory organization to the CDI and facilitates the state’s capacity to monitor and direct surplus line brokers’ placements of insurance with eligible surplus line insurers.
