Position Summary:
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Fire Alarm Technician for the University Public Safety, Emergency Services.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Works independently or as a member of a team on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses, but may be assigned to alarm system equipment on all Rutgers properties throughout New Jersey as determined necessary by the Fire Alarm Bureau Manager.
- Performs a wide range of duties, including but not limited to preventative inspection activities, unplanned emergency repairs and system equipment troubleshooting.
- Performs system software programming of all fire alarm safety equipment utilizing the equipment manufacturer's proprietary software.
- Performs installations of life safety equipment.
- Provides/maintains all building fire alarm communication equipment/programming to proprietary monitoring station.
- Responsible for the estimation of work and procuring appropriate materials for him/herself or the group. Supervises Emergency Services Officers and/or vendors as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent, and four years of experience in testing, maintenance and service of various manufacturers' fire alarm systems.
- Must be competent in performing complex and varied repair and maintenance of fire alarm systems and have the ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and building systems as they are interfaced with fire detection systems.
- A working knowledge of the New Jersey Uniform Code and the National Fire Protection Association's standard pertaining to the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire detection systems is necessary.
- Requires good communication skills, computer literacy, and familiarity with computerized maintenance systems.
- Must have the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, wiring plans and blueprints.
- A valid driver's license and two years driving experience is required. Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- May be required to work rotating shifts and be on-call for emergency troubleshooting and repair.
- It is preferred that candidates be capable of obtaining one of the following during employment:
NICET II-Fire Alarm Systems Certificate as required in accordance with the provisions of N.J.A.C. 5:74, Standard for Certification of Fire Protection Equipment Contractors.
OR - A license from the NJ Division of Law and Public Safety for Fire Alarm systems in accordance with the provisions of NJ ADC 13:31A-1.1, Fire Alarm, Burglar Alarm and Locksmith Licenses and Businesses.
