Job Description
The Staff R&D Technician is responsible for supporting engineering projects and lab operations for both the New Product Development and Sustaining Engineering teams. Specifically, the Staff R&D Technician will be a collaborative partner with the engineering team and provide testing support, accurately report test data and observations, ensure traceability of test samples, and assist in the development of test methods as needed. To support lab operations, the Staff R&D Technician will support in ensuring equipment is well maintained (e.g., calibration, scheduling maintenance, etc.), the lab (and lab practices) is safe, provide guidance and assistance to other technicians as needed, ensure the lab is compliant with applicable SOP’s and Policies and is clean/organized. As the Staff R&D Technician will be integral to the testing efforts required to establish device quality and performance, it is critically important that the Staff R&D Technician maintains an accurate Laboratory Notebook, is attentive to detail, complies with test methods and Standard Operating Procedures, and accurately records data & observations. The Staff R&D Technician will be proficient and a go to person in one or more areas of expertise within the lab(s) or within the Shared Services R&D support team. The Staff R&D Technician will also have demonstrated ability to work independently or lead a team of technicians in product testing, with minimal direction from R&D team leads, engineers and Shared Services management.
Job Duties
- Responsible for executing all testing efforts on programs assigned. Maintains attentiveness for testing abnormalities, trends, and external influences
- Assist engineers in testing, prototyping, fabrication, assembly and installation of PCBs and electronic systems
- Electronics and electrical circuit troubleshooting, debugging, and reworking
- Perform electrical measurements and tests from test procedures and engineering specifications
- Partners with engineering staff on project needs (e.g., supports test method development, acquisition of test samples/testing equipment & supplies, maintains sample traceability, etc.).
- Records and communicates all test data and testing observations with a high accuracy to program technical leads and management as required. Maintains a well-organized / accurate Laboratory Notebook in accordance with applicable SOP’s, and ensures compliance with testing protocols, test methods, and/or standards.
- Diligently advances their testing efforts / responsibilities while consistently seeking improvements to efficiency and quality.
- Supports lab operations, such as; maintenance of equipment, coordinating & scheduling calibration services, ordering supplies, quoting of test apparatus, as well as ensuring lab is a safe environment, kept clean / orderly, etc.
- Capable of collaborating with other laboratory resources to ensure efficient use of testing equipment and alignment with project priorities.
- Capable of efficiently planning their own time and advancing their testing efforts / responsibilities.
- Consistently seeks improvements to test methods and practices.
- Able to read and interpret industry test standards with high attention to detail.
- Capable of working on a team with a willingness to help or support other efforts.
- Capable of working and interacting professionally with outside suppliers and companies as needed.

Job Qualifications
Required:
- High school degree required, college level studies highly preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years experience with HS Degree/GED. Minimum of 5 years experience with Associate degree.
- Evidence of technical skills required.
- Product development testing or manufacturing product testing experience required.
- Ability to work with engineers on development of test methods and procedures and to independently conduct product testing with minimal oversite and direction required from engineering.
- Hand assemble and/or rework (remove, replace, clean) electronic parts and electronic assemblies as required.
- Hand soldering of electronic parts including fine pitch surface mount
- Ability to read and reference schematics/diagrams in both 2D and 3D
- Ability to utilize electronics engineering tools and test equipment (DMM, Oscilloscope) as well as basic hand tools (Power Drill, Screwdrivers, Wrenches, etc)
- Capable of operating testing equipment with strict adhesion to test methods required. Capable of training other technicians and engineers on test methods.
- Ability to observe tests in progress and ascertain if abnormalities with the test samples or issues / external influences are affecting the test results.
- Technical aptitude for operating testing equipment and the capability of envisioning / understanding product failure modes and technical causes & effects. Good physical dexterity to manipulate test samples.
- Capable of collaborating with engineering team to ensure a thorough understanding of the testing objectives and collaborating on the testing plan to support these objectives.
- Capable of ideating / envisioning test methods and test systems which could be employed to gather desired test data. Capable of working with and/or overseeing internal/external resources commissioned to build new testing fixtures and/or apparatus.
Preferred:
- Medical Device development experience highly preferred.
- Training in IPC standards, experience working within IPC standard practices
- Proficient in Microsoft Windows Office applications including MS Outlook (email) and MS Excel.
- Must have a professional, collaborative, and supportive attitude focused on producing high quality work and jumping in to help on all efforts.
- Ideal candidates will also comprise the desire to continuously improve their capabilities and their understanding / knowledge of our products and applicable test methodologies (e.g., International Standards, FDA testing guidance, etc.).
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must be able to maintain organization of project tasks and advance efforts on multiple projects in parallel.

The anticipated base pay range for this full-time position working at this location is $29.60 - $39.96 / hour, plus potential for annual bonus (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements). Olympus considers a variety of factors when determining actual compensation for this position, including level of experience, working location, and relevant education and certifications.
