Job description

Position Summary

Successful candidate will work directly with ADREC's manager on research projects. This includes lab tasks, trouble-shooting, and analyzing data.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:

• Performs biological assay tests and monitors activity in the reactors by analytical methods
• Performs quantitative, qualitative, and confirmatory tests as needed
• Operates, calibrates, and maintains lab equipment
• Sets up anaerobic reactors following the experimental design of the research
• Operates the reactors and collects the samples for performance and efficiency studies
• Enters and analyzes the data
• Participates in problem-solving and lab management meetings and keeps the meeting minutes
• Participates in staff meetings in ADREC and BAE Department

Communication responsibilities:

• Interacts with the manager and director of ADREC to review the ongoing research projects
• Interacts with clients to answer their questions
• Manages the email account of ADREC ( [email protected] )
• Interacts with undergraduate students and graduate students working on ADREC research projects
• Work with BAE Department administrators and technical staff
• Work with MSU service units (IPF, EHS, Surplus, University Stores, etc.)

Other responsibilities:

• Leads supervision over student employees
• Involves in the hiring process of student employees
• Provides a safe and healthy environment for others by safe storage and disposal of waste (hazardous and biological)

Must have a valid driver's license as candidate will be required to drive university vehicles.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards.

Desired Qualifications

• General chemistry and biology knowledge
• Expansive work experience in fundamental lab techniques
• Ability to use Microsoft programs for data entry, analysis, and report writing
• Being able to troubleshoot and diagnose the problems following the instruction
• Varied hours for projects that require flexibility.

Work Hours

Position will be M-F with the exception of possible project needs that may require a change of schedule for the duration of the project that include working outside normal business hours, including weekends.

This is an off-dated position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
