Job description

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Housing Navigator/Paralegal for its Gwinnett County office in Lawrenceville, GA. Our non-profit law firm provides advice and representation to low-income people in a variety of legal matters including public benefits (income and healthcare), eviction defense and housing preservation, family law (divorce, temporary protective orders), special education, consumer, and other civil legal matters. In addition to direct client services, the office operates several projects, including the Gwinnett Family Violence Project, the Gwinnett Family Law Clinic, and the Gwinnett Pro Bono Project. The staff is currently comprised of a managing attorney, six full-time attorneys, one part-time attorney, four paralegals, and two support staff.

Responsibilities: 

• The Housing Navigator/Paralegal helps clients develop a plan to address barriers, increase income, and maintain permanent housing; assist clients with public benefits applications; makes referrals for housing and other supportive services; and develops and maintains relationships with other nonprofit and governmental entities.
• In addition, the Housing Navigator/Paralegal is responsible for case intake/management including answering the phone; conducting initial client intakes and interviews; entering data into and retrieving data from our database; gathering, reviewing, organizing, and scanning documents; providing clients with information and advice under the supervision of an attorney; drafting pleadings and correspondences; notarizing documents; filing and archiving closed cases; preparing reports; and other general office tasks.
• The volume of calls can be quite heavy, and callers are often very emotional.
• Accordingly, the Housing Navigator/Paralegal must be patient, compassionate, even-tempered, and have good people and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications:

• A paralegal certificate or degree is preferred, but not required.
• Applicants must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, and have a willingness to learn new software.
• Applicants must be industrious, dependable, adaptable, detail-oriented, able to see a task through to completion, able to work in a team and alone, have experience or a demonstrated interest in working with low-income people, and have an appreciation of diversity.
• Previous experience with program administration and law office management software; and proficiency in languages other than English are highly valued.

Salary and Benefits:

• This is a grant-funded position expected to continue through December 2024 with the possibility of extension beyond that date depending on need, the availability of funding, and performance.
• The salary is $34,500+ depending on experience.
• Salaries increase annually based on a salary scale.
• The program provides generous fringe benefits including 13 paid holidays, 6 weeks paid time off, 6 weeks parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match.
• Legal Aid also offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
