Job Summary: The Carpenter is responsible to complete skilled carpentry work according to project plans and supervisory instructions. Under general supervision, perform master-level work in the design, construction, repair and maintenance of structures, access stairs, ladders, handrails, and platforms. Duties and Responsibilities: Erects temporary handrails and associated safety-related items. Install weather protection as needed. Sawing, nailing, measuring, tightening/loosening bolts, etc. Frame structures and floors, and scaffolding. Supervise the activities of laborers and apprentices. Use power tools including but not limited to, electric saws, hammer drill, drills, reciprocating saws, band saw, jig saw, miter boxes, pneumatic nail guns, and sanding machines. Verify trueness of structure or other building components using plumb bob, square, and level. Proficient in use of hand tools including but not limited to hammers, levels, tape measure, chisels, pliers, wrenches, pry bars, cat's claw, block planes, hand sanders, utility knives, tin snips, and squares. Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saw. Assemble and fasten material together to construct wood or metal framework of structure, using bolts, nails, or screws. Erect and align forms, framework, scaffolds, hoists, roof supports, or chutes. Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand tools. Study specifications in blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layouts and determine the dimensions and materials required. Possess knowledge of common tools and equipment used in carpentry work, along with ways of maintaining and repairing them. Comply with all safety requirements and participate in safety meetings. Complete other responsibilities as assigned. Key Requirements, Education, and Experience: Mus t have at least 2 years of carpentry experience in a heavy civil construction environment. High school diploma or GED required. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings is necessary. Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly with supervisor/co-workers and understand directions from supervisor. Must be able to utilize basic math and read a tape measure. Must be able to climb and have balance at considerable heights. Must have knowledge of safe work practices. Must be able to pass a background check for Tyndall AFB access. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the essential functions of this job, this position requires the ability to stand, walk, use hands, and handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, lift above their head, and talk or hear. Able to kneel, crouch or stoop, climb ladders, bend at the waist, squat, and crawl in tight or confined spaces to perform the essential functions. This position will require the ability to lift, manually move or push in excess of 75 pounds. Ascending and descending ladders or stairs is required, and movement on uneven terrain is frequently required to carry out essential duties. The ability to work in several diverse locations is pertinent, as work locations may change daily. Expected work hours will vary by job, location, and season. Working a night shift may be required from time to time. May be required to travel and/or live-in remote construction project locations as required for whatever periods of time as are necessary to complete such projects.
