The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (OVCIA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks a full-time Assistant Director of Employee Engagement and Development. The Assistant Director will be an intuitive facilitator and public speaker, adept in both in-person and virtual mediums, and focus on fostering a culture of growth and excellence. The ideal candidate must showcase a unique blend of innovative and critical thinking, emotional intelligence, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to effectively train and develop talent across all levels of an organization.

Organizational Relationship & Job Summary
As a member of the OVCIA's newly reconstituted People & Culture team (formerly known as Talent Management) and reporting to the Associate Director of Employee Engagement and Development, the Assistant Director of Employee Engagement and Development will play a critical role in the planning and execution of comprehensive professional development programming in order to enhance performance, engagement, and retention of advancement staff across campus. This position will specifically be responsible for facilitating trainings targeted to newly hired staff including, current offerings, specialty program training requests, and assist in leadership development initiatives as appropriate.
A self-starter and collaborative partner, this position will work closely with the entire People & Culture team as well as other advancement colleagues across campus to develop our employees in a way that embodies our values: Exemplify Integrity; Practice Empathy; Embrace Collaboration; Inspire Innovation; and Enable Impact.
Job Summary Play a critical role in the planning and execution of comprehensive professional development programming in order to enhance performance, engagement, and retention of advancement staff across campus. Responsible for facilitating trainings targeted to newly hired staff including, current offerings, specialty program training requests, and assist in leadership development initiatives as appropriate.
Duties & Responsibilities Professional Development Content Development and Design
- In coordination with the Associate Director of Employee Engagement and Development, author sessions, design learning outcomes, and evaluate effectiveness of professional development offerings.
- Design, plan and execute training sessions to enhance professional empathy across roles and increase knowledge, skills, and abilities of Advancement professionals in the first three years of their new role.
- In coordination with Associate Director of Employee Engagement and Development and other colleagues in the People & Culture team collaborate on activities in support of the Advancement-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy, including discussion facilitation, policy and procedure development, and participation in the OVICA DEI committee.
- Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Employee Engagement and Development, lead and manage logistics for annual newcomer retreat, including guest list, speaker list, and agenda. Serve as on-site coordinator during the retreat.
- Collaborate with Associate Director of Strategic Engagement, Internal Communications to author and schedule all pre- and post-professional development session messaging and communications via WebTools, including but not limited to announcements, links, and surveys.
- Create and maintain a professional network of internal and external Advancement professionals, faculty, and subject matter experts who can serve as keynote and topic-specific speakers for Advancement training sessions.
- Build effective relationships with partners in central IHR, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (OVCDEI), the Office of Access and Equity (OAE), colleges/units Advancement offices, University of Illinois Alumni Association, and the University of Illinois Foundation.
Facilitation
- Serve as the primary facilitator for a robust calendar of professional development sessions, targeted to employees throughout their career journey in Advancement, with an emphasis on continual growth and professional empathy. Serve as a subject matter expert when applicable.
- Co-facilitate Advancement orientation for new hires to welcome them into the campus and community and help refine content as appropriate. Co-facilitation of DEI workshops on an as-needed basis
- Serve on campus committees and working groups related to professional development as appropriate.
Engagement
- Assist the Director of Employee Experience and Associate Director of Employee Engagement and Development with coordinated check-ins of new hires during their first 2 years of employment.
- In coordination with the Associate Director of Employee Engagement and Development, assist in the identification of People & Culture needs for OVCIA and campus Advancement units through surveys, data analysis, and open communication.
- Promote and attend engagement-related activities and events being offered and executed by the People & Culture team.

Within 3 months, you'll: - Understand the People & Culture philosophies, guiding principles, and strategy, as well as the robust calendar of professional development sessions and how it is targeted to employees throughout their lifecycle in Advancement.
Build positive relationships with the People & Culture team as well as with leadership and peers in Advancement.
- Become familiar with the overarching structure of Advancement at Illinois and the alignment between central Advancement services, the University of Illinois Foundation, and the University of Illinois Alumni Association.
- Attend, then facilitate professional development and networking activities for newcomers within Advancement.
Within 6 months, you'll: - Begin to establish rapport via new employee check-ins as part of their extended onboarding schedule.
- Take facilitation and planning ownership of UpFront, the quarterly professional development session for newcomers.
By the end of the first year, you'll: - Continue to build a robust network of Advancement colleagues and external partners.
- Have a firm understanding of the multiple functions of Advancement at Illinois and develop ways to build professional empathy among roles.
- Regularly facilitate or co-facilitate professional development sessions, orientation, and other trainings and discussions.
Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration or a field closely related to the position.
- Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties in planning and facilitating training, professional development programs, and/or change management.
Preferred Qualifications - Professional experience in and/or demonstrated understanding of higher education advancement roles, including alumni relations, communications, stewardship, annual giving, major gift officer, et al.
- Certified facilitator for DiSC, True Colors, StrengthsFinder, or a similar tool.
- Professional human resources certifications (i.e. SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, and/or SPHR).
- Experience designing and implementing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategies, including addressing system and policy issues and facilitating discussions.
- Ability to speak and write persuasively, listen effectively, and engage in meaningful partnerships with both internal and external constituencies.
- High competency in data analysis fundamentals, including data tracking programs (Tableau, R, Excel, etc.).
- Commitment to advance diversity within advancement and across the campus and university.
- Familiarity and knowledge of the University of Illinois campus structure.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5020 - Human Resource Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The target salary for this position is $68,000 to $70,000.
