Job description

The Controller, also known as the Director of Finance, position is responsible for reviewing potential strategic business partnerships for operational and financial opportunities and risks. As a true business partner to management, the Controller is responsible for the overall organizational performance in regard to both the annual budget and the firm’s long-term strategy. The Controller will develop tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the management and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations. The Controller will ensure that long-term budgetary planning and cost management are in alignment with the firm’s strategic plan. The Controller position has broad responsibilities for planning, implementing, managing, and running all the finance activities of the Firm, including business planning, budgeting, forecasting, evaluating, and negotiations. The Controller is accountable for the financial and compliance operations: development of a financial and operational strategy, metrics tied to that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results. The Controller role also extends to obtaining and maintaining investor relations and partnership compliance. The Controller works closely with the Owner and the rest of the executive team on strategy, policy, problem-solving, and decision-making. The Controller does not have the authority to practice law, give legal advice, or set strategy on a per-case/per-client basis. Rather, the Controller acts with the delegated authority of the Owner, to manage the financial functions of the Firm and interact with the executives, directors, and management when finances interact or intersect with marketing, sales, production, people, or physical plant. Responsibilities: Planning • Key member of the executive management team responsible for developing, executing, refining, and evaluating the Business Plan and forward-looking Budget.  • Assist in formulating the firm’s future direction and supporting tactical initiatives. • Monitor and direct the implementation of strategic business plans. • Develop financial and tax strategies. • Manage the capital request and budgeting processes. • Develop performance measures and monitoring systems that support the company's strategic direction. Operations • Lead, direct, and supervise the finance and accounting team and any third parties to which accounting or finance functions have been outsourced. • Oversee the company's transaction processing systems. • Implement operational best practices and finance/accounting procedures, especially billing, collections, stop work, credit cards, cost advancement, expense approval, payroll, disbursement, and tracking cost of client acquisition. • Manage the processes for financial forecasting and budgets and oversee the preparation of all financial reporting. • Assess financial risks and opportunities and make recommendations and plans accordingly; evaluate return on investment as it relates to spending on payroll/personnel & position utilization, marketing and sales, and technology. • Monitor cash balances, accounts receivable and payment plans, trust account balances, and cash forecasts. Risk Management • Understand and mitigate key elements of the company's risk profile. • Monitor all open legal issues involving the firm and legal issues affecting the industry. • Construct and monitor reliable control systems. • Maintain appropriate insurance coverage. • Ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements. • Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies. • Report risk issues to the executive committee.  • Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations. • Assure legal and regulatory documents are filed and monitor compliance with laws and regulations. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting or a related field, or equivalent work experience. • Significant supervisory experience and experience working in a professional services firm. Experience in law firm budgeting and bookkeeping. • Knowledgeable about technology and profitability trends to ensure the Firm is maximizing technology and resource developments to increase capacity and efficiency.
