Description

Performs maintenance, repair, and diagnostics, on Town mechanical/motorized equipment, including police and fire vehicles, landscaping, construction, and other specialized equipment. Completes a variety of complex, skilled, and semi-skilled emergency vehicle, automotive, and equipment repair tasks.

Examples of Duties
• Perform state inspections in accordance with state laws.
• Perform new vehicle & equipment make-ready/upfit and decommission activities

.• Performs shop housekeeping to keep working area safe and organized. Sweeps, maintains inventory, cleans equipment, and services tools.
• Order and receive parts and supplies as needed to support fleet repair and maintenance activities.
• Interacts directly with internal customers and vendors.
• Maintains, inspects, repairs, and replaces worn or broken equipment and vehicle parts.
• Performs Preventative Maintenance (PM) on the Town's fleet as per Town PM procedures.
• Performs repair work on engine systems, transmission and drive axles, hydraulic systems, electrical and lighting systems, automotive heating and air-conditioning systems, and auxiliary engine systems, etc.
• Completes documentation and Fleet Maintenance Information System (FMIS) data input and completion of FMIS generated workorders as necessary for recording all repairs and service history of vehicles.
• Operates and tests vehicles and equipment before returning to department or moving to ready line.
• Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and Town attendance policies and procedures.
• Ensures all behaviors comply with the Town Personnel Rules and Regulations.
• Works on-call as scheduled; in emergency conditions, is available as needed to perform repair and relief work; performs road calls as requested.
• Informs immediate supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, and all work activities.
• Reviews work to verify that work meets standards and requirements.
• Monitors outsourced work to verify correct billing, quality, and the work performed meets Town requirements.
• Check new vehicle for bid spec compliance as needed.
• Assists other technicians with repairs or work problems; instructs/teaches less experienced technicians.
• Uses technical repair manuals, complex wiring schematics, and parts lists to effectively make repairs.
• Maintain, diagnose, and repair fire emergency vehicles and systems such as ambulances, boats, water pumping systems, aerial devices, and other emergency response vehicles/equipment as assigned.
• Repairs and services other Town vehicles and equipment as assigned.
• Coordinates all warranty repairs with various manufacturers of fire service equipment and systems.
• Ensures that all NFPA fire systems inspections and certifications are compliant and current.
• Performs other duties as assigned to include special projects and tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
• Must have or obtain a Texas Class A CDL License within 1 year of hire date
• Must be able to complete and pass the written test for a valid Texas CDL "A" Driver's License within 90 days of hire. You must provide proof of your scheduled driving test appointment with the Texas Department of Public Safety to your supervisor within 90 days from the day you pass the written test.
• Become Certified State of Texas Vehicle Inspector within six months of hire date.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain mechanic hand tools of type and quantities sufficient to perform with efficiency all required repair duties.
• Your driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
• Must have or obtain ASE Master Truck Certification within 6 months of hire date.
• Must Have a minimum of five (5) EVT (emergency vehicle technician) certifications within 6 months of hire date.


W ORK EXPERIENCE:


Must have at least two (2) years' experience in any emergency vehicle, medium/heavy truck, or equipment repair and maintenance or one (1) years' experience and a certificate of completion from an auto or diesel technical school.

Desired Qualifications
• Preference given for industry relevant work experience that exceeds the minimum requirement.
• Preference given for industry relevant auto/diesel vocational/technical training that was not used to meet the minimum work experience.
• Preference given for current ASE Certifications that exceed the minimum ASE requirement.
• Preference given for any current Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification that exceeds the minimum EVT requirement.
• Preference given for current Texas Class A or B CDL• Preference given for current TX State Inspectors License.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

Repair principles, practices, and techniques for Cars, Light to Heavy Trucks, Construction and Off-Road Equipment, and Landscaping Equipment.
• Ability to operate various hand and power tools including diagnostic scan tools, Digital Volt/Ohm Meter, wrenches, saws, hammers, welders, and cutting torches.
• Knowledge of various types of fluids and materials used in the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
• Systems and components of equipment and vehicles, including engine, transmission, rear axles and gear sets, front suspension, air and hydraulic brake systems, lighting and mechanical operations, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, multiplexing and complex electrical and electronic control systems.
• Vehicle repair and shop safety procedures and practices.
• Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
• Must have good leadership, organizational, and communicative skills.
• Must have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate and repair equipment and vehicles.
• Work well under pressure and stress.

Competence with Computer use and data input.

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain electrical and mechanical equipment/vehicles.
• Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
• Use vehicle repair and preventative maintenance check list.

• Must be able to work after normal business hours as needed

.• Adapt technical skill, Knowledge, and abilities to any type of machinery or equipment that would be encountered in the Town fleet.
• Must have knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems as applied to the automotive, emergency vehicle, construction/off road, and heavy-duty truck fields.
• Repair principles, practices, and techniques for Emergency Vehicles to include various Fire Apparatus such as Pumpers, Ladder/Aerial Trucks, Tankers, Brush/Wildland Trucks, and Ambulances.
• NFPA standards and manufacturer requirements relative to Emergency vehicles.

Physical Abilities:
• To perform the essential functions of the job must be able to talk, read, see, walk, and hear.
• Perform strenuous physical activities to include exerting up to 100 lbs. of pressure, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy supplies several times a day; able to crawl, bend, and kneel, for several hours per day, climb on and off equipment, operate vibrating equipment, work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, and under constantly noisy conditions; and work in adverse environmental conditions to include inclement weather and hazardous conditions including mechanical, electrical, fume odor, dust/mist, chemical, and toxic waste hazards.
