Registered Nurse – Behavioral Health
Moody AFB, GA Position Duties and Responsibilities: - Attends and participates in meetings during normal duty hours and professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities such as, but not limited to the following: quality improvement meetings, professional staff meetings, commander's staff meetings, primary care staff meetings, and others required by applicable regulations, MTF guidance, or as directed by supervisor.
- Serves and participates in committees, functions, and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups and assists with decision-making and process improvement. Participates in customer service initiatives, performance and quality improvement measures and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services Participates in local, AF, DoD, and national teleconferences as required and relative to the program operations and reporting requirements.
- Working knowledge and a minimum of three years of experience with levels of care to include post-hospital and acute care illness stabilization. Ability to anticipate and articulate to health management and/or interdisciplinary team the patient’s needs, requirements, abilities, and limitations.
- A minimum of three years of experience with professional nursing care standards, theories, principles, practices, disease processes, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate to severe difficulty and experience with acutely and chronically ill adult and geriatric patients as appropriate. Must possess a working knowledge of human growth and development, and pathophysiology of disease processes, as they apply to the care environment for all ages of the spectrum from pediatrics to geriatrics.
- A minimum of three years of experience with a variety of psychopharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects to include side effects and complications of their use, as well as the accurate administration of the psychopharmacologic agent. Must possess a working knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care. Utilizes critical thinking to synthesize data from multiple sources and makes appropriate clinical decisions implementing nursing care theories and existing evidence-based practices to return the patient to prehospital and/or acute illness baseline prior to discharge to home or transferring to next level of care. Recognize patients at risk for harm to self and/or others or experiencing adverse signs and symptoms and react quickly in emergency situations. Ability to calmly assess life-threating situations and appropriately coordinate/expedite life-saving intervention. Competence in all required emergency procedures for the population cared for.
- Perform nursing care and duties with minimal to no supervisory direction according to appropriate/relevant Nursing Care Standard and Nursing Code of Ethics.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity to include patient care hand-offs and care coordination in accordance with requirements. Become proficient in the use of the following computer systems: Military Health Systems Genesis and Aeromedical Services Information Management System (ASIMS) if required.
- Evaluates and cares for patients utilizing the nursing process as a basis for professional practice. Demonstrates proper patient preparation for examination and treatment. Performs dosage calculations as required to accurately administer ordered pharmacologic agents. Assesses patient’s compliance, barriers to compliance and develops a nursing plan of care accordingly
- BHCF duties as outlined in Defense Health Agency Procedural Instruction 6025.27 “Integration of Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) Services into Patient- Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and Other Primary Care Service Settings within the Military Health System (MHS) into Patient-Centered Medical Home Primary Care and Other Primacy Care Service Settings and the BHOP Practice Manual.
- Coordinates patient care through a continuum of care and the levels of care to achieve optimal health outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness. Assesses, coordinates, facilitates, and delivers care for adult patients relevant to the practice environment and procedures performed. Provides patient and family education according to credentialed provider’s instruction and documents patient and family understanding. Coordinates and documents outcomes monitoring per guidance established by Defense Health Agency Procedural Instruction 6490.02 “Behavioral Health (BH) Treatment and Outcomes Monitoring.
- Orients, trains and mentors new personnel and delegates appropriate tasks promoting development of new skills, knowledge, abilities, and empowered professionals. Works independently in the absence of direct oversight and adheres to Air Force values. Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing and resolving professional issues.
- Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries. Participates in peer review and monitoring of professional nursing practice with the ability to provide and receive feedback regarding advancement of professional practice and safe patient care.
- Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group for the purpose of informing and coordinating care to the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
- Participates in customer service initiatives, performance and quality improvement measures and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
- Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives. Promote and contribute quality performance, performance improvement programs, and nursing practice in a setting that supports professional practice and sets a positive example; identify and deliver excellence in the delivery of nursing services and care to patients/residents; introduces and disseminates best practices in nursing services. Proactively identifies process issues that could lead to negative patient outcomes and participates in the appropriate safety reporting processes for the facility.
- Must maintain a level of productivity and quality consistent with: complexity of the assignment; facility policies and guidelines; established principles, ethics, standards, and scope of practice for professional mental health nursing as outlined by the American
- Nurses Association and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association; the American Hospital Association’s Bill of Rights for Patients, the Case Management Society of America (CMSA), American Accreditation Healthcare Commission/Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC); Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC); and other applicable DoD and Service specific guidance and policies. Must also comply with the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Program, infection control and safety policies and procedures.
- Participates and successfully completes DHA care facilitator Training. BHCs must demonstrate Phase 1 core competencies to a BHC expert trainer within 3 months of being hired as detailed in the most recent version of the BHC core competency tool approved by the DHA PCBH Committee. An extension beyond the 3- month time period can be granted by the DHA PCBH Program Director. Phase 2 core competencies must be demonstrated to a BHC expert trainer within 6 months of Phase 1 completion. An extension beyond the 6-month time period can be granted by the DHA PCBH Program Director. Final verification of meeting the required core competencies will be confirmed by a DHA PCBH PM. If the candidate does not pass the course the contractor shall submit a replacement candidate upon notice of the candidate’s failure to pass any training phase.
- Care facilitator training consists of orientation webinars, reading materials and clinic shadowing tasks designed to introduce the BHC’s to integrated primary care and other concepts such as ethics and PCBH, military culture, documentation in the DOD electronic health record and mobile apps for BHC’s. The candidate must complete all BHC training requirements before engaging in BHC patient care services.
Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
- Graduate from a college or university accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Must have American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers or American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course.
- Must have at least 36 months of total nursing experience in a direct patient care clinical setting. Must have experience providing services such as psychiatric nursing or behavioral health and wellness counseling for 24 recent consecutive months of direct patient specialty care experience.
- Certified/certification eligible by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse with 2 years full-time experience in mental health.
- Must maintain a full, valid, unrestricted, and current license.
- Must be a US Citizen.
