Job description

The Health and Fitness Specialist works as part of an integrated team providing fitness services, education and expertise to employees, members and patients of Cone Health. Special populations may include, but are not limited to, cardiac, pulmonary, oncology, and diabetes. The Health and Fitness Specialist interacts with the patients, employees and members and serves as a health coach, personal trainer, and group exercise instructor in addition to supporting program development and administrative activities.

Accurately monitors heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose as needed. Able to recognize biomechanical deficiencies and help the participant overcome or find alternative exercises. Directs warm-up routines in safe, effective manner in accordance with ACSM guidelines.
Takes initiative and assists clients with exercise techniques as the need arises in all exercise settings. Attempts to motivate clients by maintaining a positive, energetic demeanor and striving to make the exercise sessions fun and safe at all times. Displays creativity in all areas of exercise leadership, thus reducing boredom and increasing participant compliance and motivation.
Leads group fitness classes with a variety of participants, encouraging them to adhere to their individual exercise prescription. Notifies appropriate staff members of any problems or difficulties/limitations disclosed by participant.
Performs exercise assessments with attention to accuracy and safety and uses test results to create customized exercise prescription and results report.
a) Assists members and clients in establishing effective, SMART fitness/wellness goals and works with client to develop the most effective plan to achieve those goals.
b) Utilizes health coaching techniques to achieve behavior change with clients/patients.
a) Is seen as a role model for a positive, healthy lifestyle.
b) Participates in intra-departmental initiatives, special projects and committees within the Wellness department as appropriate for the growth of the department. This includes but is not limited to public speaking engagements and radio and/or TV interviews (both live and taped).
Documents necessary information in accurate and timely manner and assists in data management.
Maintains a safe, clean, and inviting exercise environment within fitness facilities.

EDUCATION:

Required: BS in physical education, recreation, health or exercise science or related field.


EXPERIENCE:

Required: 1 to 3 years work in the health and fitness industry
Preferred: Medical Fitness Center experience


LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:

REQUIRED
Drivers License | Valid Drivers License
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
Required: Nationally recognized certification such as ACSM, NASM AFAA or other NCCA- Accredited Certifications that require continuing education for recertification within 6 months of hire.
PREFERRED
Preferred: Certification as ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM EP-C) preferred.
