Our State and Local Tax (SALT) team experts stay up-to-date on the laws and regulations all businesses need to be aware of - especially if they conduct any portion of their business online. States are increasingly turning to indirect tax types for their revenue and away from direct tax types, like income taxes.
Join our growing State and Local Tax team and gain professional development and experience in this specialized role that can be based out of our Columbus Ohio area office with opportunity for hybrid work.
Responsibilities
- Technical and/or second review of SALT income tax compliance for various types of businesses, with an emphasis on pass through entities. Our clients are typically private, mid-market clients filing in 10-30 states with a mix of withholding and composite returns.
- Coaching and training of direct tax team members on various direct tax technical and return topics
- Oversee direct tax notice resolution, with an emphasis on audit defense
- Research and documentation of direct tax technical questions
- Involvement in or leading nexus studies, risk assessments, voluntary disclosure projects, sale of business, and other consulting projects
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Critical thinking and ability to deal with unexpected issues
- Project management, prioritization, and delegation of work in a team structure
- Ability to train and mentor staff
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills utilizing in person, zoom/teams, email, and phone communications effectively
- Ability to work effectively on a team and independently
- Comfortable working on multiple projects at a time at different work stages
Requirements
- B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent from an accredited university
- CPA or licensed attorney, or alternative credentials, particularly those in the state and local tax field (e.g. CMI) preferred. Required for consideration for promotion to senior manager or partner.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience preparing/reviewing state income tax returns for various types of entities and providing technical advice on multi-state income tax issues
- Technical knowledge of direct tax returns for pass-through entities and C corporations in many jurisdictions.
- Previous public accounting firm experience required, regional firm preferred
- Tax Prep software experience required (Axcess is preferred)
- Proficient in Microsoft suite, with an emphasis in Excel including pivot tables, vlookups, and similar functions
- Proficient in tax research software (e.g. Checkpoint, BNA, CCH, Lexis, etc) is preferred.
