Standardized Patient Actor
Pay: $20.00/hour as needed
Status: Independent Contractor during probationary period (6 mos. from hire date)
POSITION SUMMARY
The Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine in Provo Utah is looking for local talented individuals who have acting ability or the desire to learn how to portray patients in a medical setting with student doctors. This position is flexible, and training is available.
Standardized Patients -
“SPs” are required to accurately portray a patient, family member, guardian or
other role that assists in providing realistic simulated experiences in a
medical setting utilizing specific behaviors, emotions and/or disease symptoms
while interacting with students. They also provide valuable feedback
as the objective is to enable experiential learning and/or assessment of
students' skills. The actor must be comfortable in both a live
setting as well as being filmed for recordings that aid in the education of
student learners.
The setting for the simulation can be in various locations such as a clinical exam or “doctor’s office” as well as inpatient/outpatient settings. There may be times where the simulation could take place in other locales such as outdoors or a simulated residence of a patient. The performing artist will use standardized measurement tools provided by the college to allow for consistent evaluation and feedback to the student.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Director of Medical Simulation:
1. Prepares for and participates in simulation events and activities.
1.1 Collaborates with
Director of Medical Simulation for scheduling of simulated events and
activities as needed.
1.2. Standardized Patients (SP) will be provided with case specific scrips detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations and be allowed time to memorize and prepare.
1.3. Presents case information in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated interactive patient history and/or medical examinations.
1.4. Remains in a specific patient character as trained when responding to student questions.
1.5. Because of the way in which data is collected, SP’s must also be able to recall actions and dialogue that may have occurred during an interaction with the student trainee. Must be able to be trained to give feedback regarding the interaction.
1.6. Participates in group training and/or mentorship of entry-level standardized patients that are less experienced as needed.
1.7. Participates in cooperative working relationships with faculty who have expertise in education resources, practice techniques and evidenced based treatment modalities related to the simulated scenarios and medical simulation activities.
1.8. Be able to follow directions in achieving the portrayal, be highly dependable in their work, including being punctual to scheduled appointments and meetings.
1.9. Maintains confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors and feedback evaluations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education : High School Diploma or equivalent GED Required.
Experience : Previous Standardized Patient experience preferred but not required. Formal training and/or certification with significant experience in areas such as theatre, dramatic scrip, acting for film/TV and vocal performance is preferred but not required. Experience working in a variety of theatrical and multimedia settings preferred. Ability to provide own transportation as some travel may be required.

· Occasional: Lifting under 35 lbs. Raising and lowering objects under 35 lbs. from one level to another

· Occasional: Bending/Stooping: Trunk bending downward and forward by bending spine at waist requiring full use of lower extremities and back muscles
· Occasional: Reaching below shoulders: Extending arms in any direction below shoulders.
· Occasional: Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands.
Note: Some minimal medical examination techniques may be used such as taking pulse, listening to heart/lungs, and physical examination of joints, bones, tissues, and muscles as part of the simulated diagnostic experience.
