Job description

1. Performs safety audits and field hazard assessments for laboratories, other work areas, facilities and equipment. Interviews faculty, staff and students, and observes their work practices to verify conformity with standards and best practices, and to check the safety of work areas for University personnel and outside contractors. 2. Reviews proposed research protocols for completeness and procedural compliance. 3. Reviews construction design plans and attends construction planning meetings, consultations, and commissionings to identify the space's safety issues in order to comply with all safety laws, regulations, etc. 4. Identifies exposure risks, performs employee exposure monitoring, reviews data; recommends ways to reduce exposure. 5. Instructs University personnel in applicable regulations, policies and procedures. 6. Inspects equipment and activities against standards to provide safety, compliance and work practice instructions. Reviews area hazards and risks associated with research protocols for the assignment of a risk level. Maintains and ensures the efficient operation of related safety equipment. 7. Assesses job hazards to recommend appropriate training, personal protective equipment, specialized work practices, administrative controls, facility adequacy and engineering controls. 8. Investigates accidents, incidents and complaints of unsafe work areas. Recommends corrective actions and ways to reduce risk. Conducts follow-up interviews and counsels employees involved. 9. Trains individuals and groups based on legal requirements, findings and observations of deficiencies, safety issues with how work is being performed, and how equipment, biological materials, chemicals, radioactive materials and other hazardous materials are handled. 10. Responds to hazardous materials incidents and assists the EHS on-call emergency response team. 11. May perform other duties as assigned.



Required Skill/ability 1: Ability to exercise good judgment regarding health and safety. Demonstrated skills and knowledge in technical safety disciplines (e.g., radiation safety, industrial hygiene, biosafety, chemical safety, environmental monitoring, and sampling methods). Knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and appropriate calibration procedures.



Required Skill/ability 2: Knowledge of DOT, IATA and RCRA regulations, and hazardous waste management. General knowledge of other State and Federal environmental health and safety regulations. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously due to the diversity of EHS services and the wide range of potential work locations on campus.



Required Skill/ability 3: Ability to read and interpret shipping regulations/guidelines (DOT and IATA), along with being the ability to determine whether permits and/or licenses are required by CDC, USDA, USFW, DOC, etc. for research/clinical materials. Ability to learn how to read vector maps and review research documentation to evaluate the need for export licenses.



Required Skill/ability 4: Ability to establish and maintain professional, collaborative, service-oriented, cooperative and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and regulatory agencies through effective and positive communication.



Required Skill/ability 5: Good verbal and written communication, training, and presentation skills, including the abilities to communicate risks effectively, speak clearly and engagingly about health and safety issues before small and large groups. Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and database computer programs.



Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Radiation Safety/Health Physics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field, and two years of work experience in a safety related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of safety and/or environmental issues, including rules and regulations that pertain to them.
