Job description
InLine Engineers, A Gray Company, has been providing engineering and project management services for the development and execution of capital projects relating to processing, packaging, and facility improvements in the food and beverage industry since 1996.
Position Description
The Process Engineer II independently executes project tasks and further develops engineering capabilities related to food and beverage processing design for the development and execution of capital projects, with limited need for direction and guidance of more senior engineers and project managers. Prior experience/ exposure to food and/or beverage production is highly preferred. There is opportunity to work on all phases of a project, from the initial concept/ budgeting through the installation and start-up of new production lines, as well as upgrades to existing lines. The Process Engineer II works closely with Project teams to perform process design and play a key role in the successful completion of projects for our valued customers. This is a salaried, exempt position.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Be a reliable team player that builds positive relationships with peers, project teams, suppliers, and the customer. Comfortable in sharing their perspective.
- Recognized as a go-to team member for technical deliverables. Continues to gain technical depth of knowledge along with applying basic and more complex concepts and techniques of process systems for a wide range of food and beverage processing applications.
- Support the project team, process engineering team, and the company by completing the defined scope of work with excellence and timeliness to the satisfaction of the customer.
- With minimal support of others, is capable of serving as a technical lead on medium-sized efforts. Largely capable of developing documentation or strategies prior to finalizing deliverables. Requests input as needed.
- Good understanding of project workflow and methods for determining needs and solutions for batch and/or continuous processing systems. This includes developing specifications, assisting with estimation, project justification/ feasibility, budget, schedule, design, implementation, procurement, installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ensuring that facilities and equipment comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Compiles engineering experience associated specifically with food manufacturing processes. Good understanding of thermal and fluid sciences and applications to the food industry.
- Displays a solid ability to pick up processes/ procedures/ best practices via training, education, knowledge share groups (E3), conferences, and/or internal project involvement. Can begin to lead E3 groups.
- Can assume a lead role in site support and commissioning, including planning and facilitation.
- Can provide budget and timeline constraints that influence a task or project.
- On a path to obtain PE license.
- Regularly plan their owns tasks.
- Provides input on multiple tasks for estimating and supports the development of the scope of work. Can also generate an entire estimate for specific tasks and can also generate a small proposal within their area of expertise. Can support a sales call or site visit with salesperson, Project Manager, and/or Program Manager.
- Participate in peer reviews.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Possesses experience in tasks associated with the work, such as:
- Prepare equipment lists and data sheets, block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams and P&ID’s as needed.
- Perform detailed processing design calculations and simulations.
- Develop mass & energy balances.
- Develop written sequence of operation narratives for equipment, systems, and process controls.
- Assist in creation and review of layout drawings.
- Assist in preparing vendor and contractor bid and construction packages for project equipment, components, and installations. Assist with bid analyses.
- Visit customer sites for data acquisition, audits, and surveys of the customers facilities and equipment, progress meetings, and to oversee installation and startup as needed.
- Generate requirements for equipment performance and participate in vendor factory acceptance tests (FATs), reviews, and trials.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Successful with Process Engineer I duties.
- Ability to perform in a highly collaborative, cohesive team environment, with InLine, other teams in the Gray family of companies, or other external partner companies.
- Strong desire and aptitude to interact and build relationships with customers.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in chemical or mechanical with an emphasis on process systems is preferred. Related degrees from an accredited curriculum will also be considered.
- Experience in detailed process design, preferably related to food and beverage processing lines or related transferable expertise is preferred.
- Attentiveness to detail, follow-up procedures, and documentation of action. Proficient in time management and personal organization.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior experience with MS Outlook, MS Project, MS Excel and MS Word.
- AutoCAD experience is a plus.
- Any technical writing experience and/ or skills (e.g., technical specifications, scope of work documents) are advantageous.
- Experience in any aspects of development and execution of capital projects is very favorable.
- General understanding of automation control systems (PLC, HMI, VFD’s, etc.) is preferred.
- Ability to learn about and evaluate existing processing operations and suggest and drive solutions that provide ROI and improve productivity.
- Travel is required. Travel requirements vary depending on assigned projects. InLine Engineers strives to distribute the project workload fairly and works with each team member to achieve a satisfactory work-life balance.
- Valid driver’s license required.

- Generally, normal office environment where noise level is moderate and temperature/humidity is controlled. Overtime may be required.
