7-12 Media Specialist

Qualifications:  The 7-12 Media Specialist must hold a valid Nebraska professional teaching certificate.  The Media Specialist works as a collaborator and leader to ensure that students and staff are influential users of ideas and information; students are empowered to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information to instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information; and to collaborate with teachers to design and complement instruction, and assess student learning. 

Length of Contract:  Will follow the length of service as outlined in the Negotiated Agreement.

Immediate Supervisor:  The 7-12 Media Specialist reports directly to the Building Principal(s) or designee.  

General Job Description: In accordance with district policies and procedures,the 7-12 Media Specialist provides a library media program for students. The Media Specialist teaches classes, and assists staff in identifying and gathering reference materials related to subject matter in the curriculum. He or she serves on special committees on a volunteer basis, and participates in all required in-service training programs. 

Specific Job Functions:  The 7-12 Media Specialist:

1. Provide the expertise necessary to ensure that the school library media program is aligned with the district’s mission, goals, and objectives as an integral component of the learning/instructional program.  

2. Effective oral and written communication skills. 

3. Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with students, staff, and parents. 

4. Collaborates with classroom teachers to sign, implement, and evaluate instruction that ensures integration of literature and information literacy skills into student learning.  

5. Maintains an efficient system of classifying, cataloging, and circulating all library materials; instructs teachers and students in using the library system.  

6. Ability to select and provide access to various materials that meet the needs of different learning situations. 

7. Knowledge and ability to teach information and technology literacy needed for independent learning. 

8. Ability to provide an environment conducive to quick accessibility, good study habits, and development of proficient media users. 

9. Maintains a schedule that is flexible and accessible to students and faculty.  

10. Supervises the library material inventory, evaluates the collection, weeds obsolete and worm materials, and updates inventory records and the catalog.  

11. Knowledge of civil rights regarding free access to materials and copyright laws. 

12. Ability to be flexible to accommodate teachers, students, parents/guardians, and community members. 

13. Promotes users of library media center materials through displays and published communications.  

14. Understands and ensures that state and local policies are followed and aligns district processes to meet state requirements.  

15. Align and ensure that the Nebraska Department of Education’s suggested standards and resources are aligned with content expectations.  

16. Helps students develop attitudes and skills, leading to lifelong learning and library use.

17. Knowledge and ability to work with technology and assist integration in the classroom.

18. Serve as technology liaison and perform basic troubleshooting on school devices.

19. Performs other duties as assigned

Evaluation:  All teaching staff are evaluated annually according to the “Appraisal of Teacher Service” provisions in the Springfield Platteview Community Schools Handbook. The building principal or designee performs this function, and the summative evaluation is completed twice annually for probationary staff and once annually for tenured staff, at a minimum. All due process prescribed in state statutes is afforded to teachers of Springfield Platteview Community Schools.
