By joining the Division of Oil and Gas, Permit Review and Compliance Branch, Permit Review Section as a Geologist III in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to interpret geological information submitted on oil and gas well records to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations.


Holders of the Geologist III position will complete tasks such as:

• Interpret geological information submitted on oil and gas well completion reports, electric logs, and plugging affidavits to determine if KAR/KRS is satisfied.
• Conduct field investigations and measure methane emissions on potential orphan well candidates and conduct remediation investigations. Prepare geology reviews for well plugging projects.
• Conduct technical review of the geological information submitted on oil and gas permit applications and Gathering Line and/or Flow Line applications. Interpret and import/digitize topographical maps. Update and maintain Geographic Information System (GIS) database.
• Provide technical assistance and serve as a consultant to staff, the oil and gas industry, government agencies, and the general public. Prepare geotechnical reports, disseminate geological information and complete special projects related to oil and gas geology.
• Review tank battery reports and interpret geological data. Map and track the tank battery locations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in geology, earth system science, earth and environmental sciences, or related field.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three years of geological experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in geology will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Registration by the Board of Registration for Professional Geologists (KRS Chapter 322A) will substitute for the required education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed both in an office and in a fieldwork setting.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
