Departmental Overview

Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. Established in 1943, BPH is a professional school on the UC Berkeley campus that comprises six academic divisions and nearly 30 research centers and programs. The Division of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) in the UC Berkeley School of Public Health (BPH) aims to address environmental exposures and health disparities locally and globally. Known throughout the world, EHS is a leading institution examining air quality and the impacts of pollution on community health. The Berkeley Exposure Assessment Research (BEAR) laboratory is a key program within EHS, and collaborates extensively with other universities, community groups, and government agencies to advance knowledge about the environment and health.

The San Joaquin Valley Pollution and Health Environmental Research Study (SPHERE) is a large air quality study based in Fresno and Stockton, CA. SPHERE is funded by the California Air Resources Board and is a collaboration between the University of California (Berkeley, Merced, and San Francisco), and local community partners to assess exposures to air pollutants among families living in Fresno and Stockton. These communities are highly impacted by air pollution and are also burdened by economic, social, and health inequities. The air quality data collected as part of SPHERE include selected criteria air pollutants (PM2.5, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide), black carbon, PAHs, and VOCs from 65 households. SPHERE strives to understand and reduce the risks of air pollution exposure to children's health in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.


The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $35.00 - $42.00.
