Job description

Responsible for day-to-day operations of the Memorial Health Lab Information System (LIS), primarily Cerner PathNet and CoPathPlus, and third-party applications related to laboratory management and patient care. Maintains LIS, related systems, and records in compliance with CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), CAP (College of American Pathology), AABB (American Association of Blood Banks), TJC (The Joint Commission), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and health system standards. Takes charge for planning, organizing, and managing the integrated LIS software and ensures an integrated plan for all assigned applications and laboratory instruments. Works closely with Laboratory leaders, medical directors, and end users to determine features, configurations, and workflow to optimize LIS functions. Serves as a liaison between Laboratory and Pathology, Information Systems, and other hospital departments, and coordinates the implementation of applications between user groups with the Laboratory and Pathology departments.   1. Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) for the development of policies, processes and procedures related to laboratory and pathology information management, maintenance of informational integrity and security in the LIS, and the protection of patient privacy and confidentiality.
  2. Performs a variety of basic and complex processes to support the laboratory and pathology quality assurance programs, including generating reports, conducting audits, applying rules and algorithms, and leading projects or initiatives that include LIS upgrades and changes.
  3. Oversees the work assignments of the lab system specialists in coordination with the laboratories and Memorial Health Information Systems, gives timely and constructive feedback, provides mentoring and coaching as needed, and contributes input into annual performance reviews.
  4. Designs processes and systems that support laboratory and pathology end-user decision making and develops and delivers training materials and programs that support use of the systems.
  5. Applies advanced understanding of laboratory operations, quality management, and workflow (pre-, post-, and analytic phases); medical terminology; and laboratory billing to achieve LIS optimization.
  6. Advises laboratory and administrative leaders on opportunities to adjust or automate clinical and business processes to facilitate ease of use and understanding, flow of information, accurate and timely reporting, and reduction of manual work. Recommends and implements changes to improve efficiency, quality, customer satisfaction, and overall efficiency of the laboratory.
  7. Assigns tasks and leads all aspects of the analysis, testing, validation and implementation of updates, changes, and maintenance to LIS and related applications. Provides regular updates to business owners, medical directors and end-users on status of projects.
  8. Serves as the system leader to ensure the continuous operation of the LIS and related applications including emergency response; reviews and approves all change requests and maintains documentation of testing and LIS configurations.
  9. Serves as a liaison between the system Laboratories, Information Systems, and applications vendors for planning, purchase decisions, and implementation of revised or new products.
  10. Performs other related work as required or requested.
