Job description
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), North Central Region is seeking motivated candidates for an Environmental Scientist to support our conserved lands wildfire resiliency program. This position is part of a large team that manages over 100,000 acres of habitat in the North Central Region. The Environmental Scientist is responsible for planning and implementing wildfire resiliency projects. This includes project management, mapping, tracking progress towards program objectives, planning and developing contracts, and adaptive management. The incumbent will collaborate within the conserved lands team, and various agencies and stakeholders throughout the region to maximize the benefits of these projects.
This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.
During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Ability to use a computer keyboard for several hours each day; complete office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking; attend meetings and conference calls. The position may require field work. Driving may require travel of up to four or more hours each way including overnight travel. Work schedules may include early mornings and late nights; hiking over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain and use an All-Terrain Vehicle; and work in inclement weather.
The position may require the incumbent to wear an official uniform for identification purposes. Must be willing to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, and work on a computer with a keyboard and mouse.In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
We are seeking candidates with a positive attitude and willingness to collaborate as part of a team. Experience with mapping and data analysis software and programs and/or a background in fire or forest ecology,understanding of fuels management and habitat restoration, experience working with or around mechanical equipment including chainsaws, chippers, and heavy equipment, or a background in rangeland ecology would be beneficial.
