Rutgers Preparatory School is the oldest independent school in New Jersey with a tradition of rigorous and diverse academic offerings. RPS seeks a kind and knowledgeable Assistant or Associate Director of College Counseling (title commensurate with experience) to join our Upper School. The current team consists of Co-Directors of College Counseling, an Associate Director of College Counseling, and an Administrative Assistant. The new member of our staff will be a team member who performs the following responsibilities:

• Counseling students and partnering with families to foster a student-centered college search and application process in a complex and changing landscape
• Provides pre-college counseling support for students in grades 9-11, including highlighting summer programs
• Provide counseling and write detailed letters of support on behalf of ~30% of Rutgers Prep’s graduating class annually
• Support counselees through the process of researching and developing a list of colleges, drafting and revising college applications
• Plan and conduct college information programs regarding college admission, athletic recruitment, standardized testing, financial aid, etc.
• Maintain and cultivate relationships with college admission officers while also staying up-to-date on trends in higher education, both nationally and internationally
• Represent the RPS College Counseling Team at national and regional conferences, college tours, and local college events

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

5+ years of experience in a high school counseling community and/or college admissions office are recommended in addition to the following skills and characteristics:

• Experience in working with and supporting diverse populations
• Outstanding communication skills, both in writing and as a public speaker
• An understanding of the developmental needs of adolescents and a commitment to supporting them on an individual level and in a developmentally appropriate manner
• A commitment to on-going education with regards to the ever-changing field of college admissions; a strong interest in professional development
• Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to work collaboratively with faculty and administration
• Strengths in both taking initiative and following through on commitments, as well as technological fluency in support of advancing the team’s work and mission
• Organize and host events and programs with the College Counseling team for students and families
• An ability to achieve high standards within a time-constrained, high-expectations environment
