POSITION SUMMARY:
The National Institutes of Health is seeking a Chemical Biology Research Scientist with extensive experience in the field of chemical biology. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in the development of small molecule tools and the application of advanced techniques in
chemical biology, chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. This role involves leading the design and synthesis of novel compounds, supporting high-throughput screening efforts, and optimizing bioanalytical methods. The Chemical Biology Research Scientist will collaborate closely with internal and external teams to drive projects from conception to proof-of-concept, maintaining a strong focus on innovation and efficiency in chemical research.
TASKS. The contractor shall:
Develop and lead overarching synthesis strategies for analog generation in chemical biology research.
Support and lead triaging of chemical matters from high-throughput screening based on chemical structures, assay data, and pharmacokinetic properties.
Design and perform chemical synthesis of small molecule tools for advanced chemical biology research.
Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in proteomics, metabolomics, and related experimentation.
Contribute to ASPIRE (A Specialized Platform for Innovative Research Exploration), particularly in automated reaction screening.
Collaborate with internal or external partners, communicating progress and coordinating chemistry and biology studies for project advancement.
Participate in ideation, resource acquisition, and management to influence project direction towards proof-of-concept.
Write papers, abstracts, and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific meetings.
Mentor team members and provide training in chemistry-related techniques and tools.
Manage laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, safety protocols, and supply management.
REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
Minimum of eight years of related experience, preferably in a research setting focused on chemical biology or medicinal chemistry.
Proficiency in techniques used in chemical biology, such as chemical synthesis, assay development, and bioanalytical method optimization.
Demonstrated experience in leading medicinal chemistry projects, including the use of computational modeling tools.
Strong background in working with high-throughput screening data and physicochemical property analysis.
Excellent skills in data management, including experience with software packages such as ChemDraw, SciFinder, and other data analysis tools.
Proven ability to write technical documents, including tech transfer documents, technical reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
Experience in mentoring and providing training within a chemistry team.
Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with diverse teams and for presenting complex scientific data.
Familiarity with lab management responsibilities, including safety compliance and inventory control.
