Job Summary

Under the direction of Dr. Samuel Achilefu, the Achilefu lab’s mission focuses on developing new approaches to uncover the molecular basis of human disease by using new strategies to image, treat, and monitor treatment responses in cells, small animals, and humans. We develop new molecular probes, devices, imaging methods, and interventional therapies for cancer.

The lab is looking for a Research Scientist with a strong background in organic synthesis to join the team with the following expertise:

· PhD in organic chemistry, chemical biology, or related field.

· Extensive experience with organic synthesis techniques, chromatography, mass spectrometry, NMR, HPLC, etc.

· Excellent communication, time management, and collaborative skills.

· Experience mentoring and supervising undergraduate/graduate students is a plus.

· Motivated self-starter able to work in a fast-paced research environment.

Laboratory Job Duties

· Design, synthesize, and characterize novel molecular probes and cancer drugs, for molecular imaging and treatment applications. Utilize organic synthesis techniques and interpret analytical data.

· Optimize synthetic routes and improve yields/purity through systematic testing of reaction conditions and spectroscopy analysis. Troubleshoot synthetic challenges.

· Document detailed experimental methods and maintain accurate laboratory records. Analyze results and present findings at group meetings. Revise, review, and help author test methods, reports, and manuscripts based on research findings.

· Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and physicians to evaluate molecular probe or drug candidates. Exhibit strong interpersonal skills, a professional attitude, and excellent written and oral communication to produce consistently high-quality work.

· Maintain laboratory equipment and calibration records for instruments and ensure cleanliness, organization, and inventory for efficient laboratory operations.

Experience and Education

· Ph.D. degree with major coursework in field of assignment and five (5) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least two (2) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent. or

· Master’s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and seven (7) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least three (3) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent. or

· Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and nine (9) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least four (4) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent.

Job Duties

· Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs, and personally participates in assigned scientific or medical research project. Selects or assists in selection of key research personnel. Determines specific goals or objectives to be attained and assigns and reviews work of subordinates. Plans experimental protocols.

· Reviews and analyzes resulting research data. Revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data.

· Compiles, writes, and submits research results to supervisor. Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors.

· Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.

· Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.

· May confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research project.

· Performs other duties as assigned.
