JOB SUMMARY :
Under direct supervision, the H.V.A.C. Mechanic performs duties related to the repair, maintenance, operation, adjustment, and/or installation of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment and related electric or pneumatic control systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
- Install, repair, adjust, service and maintain systems for heating, ventilation, air-conditioning including pneumatic and electric controls;
- Repair, clean, adjust and install oil and gas burners and auxiliary heating specialties other than high-pressure equipment;
- Maintain air compressors, air dryers, and low voltage installations such as warning light systems;
- Install, operate, service and repair conventional mechanical refrigeration/air conditioning equipment including ice machines, refrigerators and general-purpose air-conditioning units;
- Considered an Essential Trained Responder, fit-tested for a breathing apparatus and trained to use special equipment to respond to an emergency or hazardous situation.
- Work with an automated energy management system to control building environment;
- Considered essential personnel which means that this position may be needed at times when the University is closed or in emergency situations as determined by supervisor;
- Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment;
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
% of Time
50% Perform repair work on H.V.A.C. systems equipment.
15% Installation of new H.V.A.C. equipment and controls.
15% Perform other trades on work orders as directed by supervisor.
10% Monitor and make adjustments on the Energy Management System.
10% Maintain air compressors, air dryers, and low voltage installations such as warning light systems.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and systems diagrams.
- Knowledge of heating, refrigeration/air-conditioning equipment and/or pneumatic and electrical control systems.
- Ability to exhibit journey level skill in the maintenance and repair procedures including preventative maintenance, breakdown repair, and trouble-shooting, construction, installation and fabrication techniques typical in trade.
- Good mechanical judgement and a working knowledge of general construction principles.
- Computer skills necessary to operate Energy Management systems.
- Ability to perform all of the above essential job functions for a minimum of an eight hour shift, with one-half hour unpaid meal break, without significant risk of serious injury.
- Ability to work overtime to respond to emergencies.
- Ability to work second shift or weekends when necessary.
- Ability to adhere to safety procedures in the performance of job and be conscious of security issues involved in daily routine.
- Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis.
ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS :
The functions of the position usually performed standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, heavy lifting, climbing ladders, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. H.V.A.C. mechanics must be able to work in steam tunnels, pits, and crawl spaces. The mechanic must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds and staging. Under special circumstances, protective equipment and garb may be required. Tasks involving H.V.A.C. work involves extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
- High School diploma and trade or vocational training required, otherwise, any combination of education equivalent to graduation from high school or other combination of education, training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
- A minimum of five years experience at the journey level.
- A valid New York State driver's license is required that satisfies both University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a motor vehicle. Must also be able to operate a motor vehicle in Canada.
- Experience with Energy Management systems.
- Certificate in refrigeration preferred.
