Responsibilities

This principal developer role will work with the division of Computational Pathology and AI (CPAI) to help labs across the Department of Lab Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) to bring new AI tools to clinical laboratory testing by using DLMP’s test life cycle process (TLCP).  Activities will include evaluating and validating vended and novel large language model (LLM), machine vision, and other tools as well as acting as a liaison between laboratories and other stakeholders to ensure these tools successfully translate into production. 

Departmental test development/innovation platform leader who develops, innovates, evaluates, and implements novel/new tests, methodologies, technologies, or products for the laboratory under the intellectual and scientific guidance of laboratory directors and senior principal developer. Test development/innovation platform leader responsible for development/innovation support of multiple projects across the department. Responsible for improvement of existing methods or implementation of novel technology of proven validity. Test development/innovation platform leader on cross-departmental teams, including Bioinformatics and IT, to create final recommendations to the laboratory directors and supervisors in the evaluation of novel laboratory equipment, instrumentation, procedures, and computer software and hardware. Test development/innovation platform leader and mentor for test development /innovation staff. Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in clinical/medical laboratory science (CLS/MLS), medical technology (MT), chemistry, biological science from an accredited institution or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in addition to a certificate in MLS. For roles supporting the Cytopathology laboratory, a Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology or Bachelor's degree with completion of an accredited Cytotechnology program. In histopathology or non-testing laboratories, bachelor's with laboratory certification if applicable. Six years of relevant laboratory experience; or a Master's degree from an accredited institution in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology and four years of relevant laboratory experience; or a Doctoral degree in chemistry or a biological science and two years of relevant laboratory experience. A HEW certificate may be substituted for the specified degree. Other clinical laboratory specialty certificates will be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis. Master's degree from an accredited institution in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology or Doctoral degree (PhD) in chemistry or a biological science preferred. Test development/innovation leader for multiple complex cross-area projects. Self motivated, highly organized, efficient, and able to work independently exercising strong decision-making and project management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Capable of creating a method using reference material and adapting existing knowledge and procedures to develop novel methods or products. Mental flexibility to work on projects with multiple technologies. Superior analytical and scientific competence with laboratory procedures. Experience with a variety of analytical techniques. Academic rank and/or Associate appointment preferred. ASCP or other certification pertinent to the laboratory field may be required depending on the laboratory specialty and prevailing regulatory requirements. For roles supporting the Cytopathology laboratory, Cytotechnologist (CT,ASCP) or Specialist in Cytotechnology (SCT, ASCP). Employees obtaining CT certification(s) after January 1, 2004 will be required to demonstrate evidence of ongoing maintenance of certification. Employees obtaining SCT certification(s) after January 1, 2006 will be required to demonstrate evidence of ongoing maintenance of certification.

The ideal candidate will have experience developing and validating clinical assays and strong communication and organizational skills.  Experience or familiarity with data science and informatics, LLM, machine vision, and machine learning is preferred.
