Job description
Boston Public Schools (BPS) seeks qualified individuals to provide at-home instruction services on as needed basis to students participating in the Home and Hospital Instruction Program. Tutors will be matched appropriately to best fit the needs of individual students.
REPORTS TO: Home and Hospital Instruction, Program Coordinator
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Thoroughly complete Scholastic Records for each student tutored (i.e. course name, chapter, unit name, and accurate description of assignments).
- Confirm tutoring assignments within 24 hours of receiving initial phone call/email.
- Contact parent/guardian to introduce self and arrange session times and location.
- Provide tutoring schedule to Home and Hospital Instruction Program office.
- Pick up a packet from Home and Hospital office before beginning to tutor, and contact student's school to arrange pickup of school materials/assignments.
- Tutor student (only) for hours designated by Home and Hospital staff.
- Follow the Home and Hospital Instructor Responsibilities list provided prior to the first tutoring assignment.
- Maintain contact with the guidance counselor, student support coordinator or the SESS coordinator from the student's school.
- Obtain parent signature on all timesheets upon completion of each session.
- Maintain and complete accurate time sheets/attendance and Scholastic Record sheets
- Maintain consistent and effective communication with the Home and Hospital Instruction Program; including but not limited to: reporting unusual circumstances regarding tutoring sessions, identifying misalignment in the student's tutoring needs or any additional supports that the student might need.
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree
- Passing score on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure ( MTEL) for Communication and Literature or equivalent from out of state
- Experience providing one-on-one tutoring to students
- Ability to work independently
- Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
- Certified teacher with at least 2 years of experience in an urban classroom setting
- Masters degree in education
- Certified in at least one subject area
- Severe Special Education Certification
- Experience administering the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System Tests (MCAS) or equivalent.
- Experience in providing education services to home- or hospital-bound students
TERMS: Stipend position; work as needed at BTU contractual rate and contingent upon hours worked.
In order to ensure quality of our services, the Home and Hospital Instruction Program will perform quality assurance checks which could include random visits to tutoring sites and written parent evaluations as well as phone calls to parents to check on tutoring status.
