The School of Biological Sciences is comprised of four academic departments, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology Behavior and Evolution, Molecular Biology, and Neurobiology, which reflect broad foci in faculty research and in the academic programs offered by the School. Each department is headed by a Chair who works individually to represent their department, and works collaboratively as a member of the School's Council of Chairs (CoC) on those school concerns which cross the boundaries of section governance. The School has over 100 faculty FTE and approximately 5000 undergraduate students in 8 majors, with annual enrollments of approximately 30,000.
Under general supervision of the PI and other senior researchers, the Staff Research Associate 2 will work independently to make design and construct jumbo (>200 kb) bacteriophage genomes as yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs) using synthetic and semi-synthetic DNA. They will then introduce those YACs into appropriate bacterial host cells so that the input DNA commandeers the bacterial machinery to produce the new phage varieties as coded by the genomes. The work will involve computational genome design, synthetic biology to assemble phage genomes, yeast genetics, and basic bacteriophage techniques. In particular, much of the work will involve yeast. This will include yeast strain genetic manipulation, yeast transformation of DNA and selection on the appropriate yeast cell plates, preparing yeast cell extracts for various biochemical analyses, immunofluorescence, live cell imaging and RNA analyses.
Other duties include: analyzing and interpreting DNA sequence and analyzing genetic screens. The Staff Research Associate 2 will participate in writing manuscripts, and attend and present research results at laboratory meetings.
