About the Position:

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is committed in educating students to be culturally, globally, socially, historically and environmentally astute, civically responsible alumni able to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (Administrator IV). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

As the leader of the largest college of California State University, Fullerton, the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will play a significant role on the senior administrative team of the University, including serving on the University President's Extended Cabinet; providing vision and leadership for the College, respecting the varying priorities and needs of its departments; advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the faculty, staff, and student body; protecting and expanding the collaborative environment for faculty, staff, and students that already exists in the College; and being an effective listener, a transparent communicator, and a strong and skilled administrator-leader adept at data-based decision-making.

Reporting to the Dean are Associate Deans, as well as a Business Manager, Administrative Resources Manager, Director of Development, and administrative personnel. In addition, the department/division/program chairs/coordinators and centers report to the Dean. The Dean will work as an integral part of a new and dynamic senior leadership team engaged in helping to chart an exciting future for California State University, Fullerton. Other duties as assigned.

The Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences will champion, both internally and externally, the mission of the College and the fundamental role of the humanities and social sciences in producing educated individuals and world citizens. Create an environment in which the faculty of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences can reach their full potential as teachers and scholars. Advocate for the distinctive scholarly and pedagogical needs of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in the development and implementation of University-wide policies, procedures, and resource allocation. Preserve the unity of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences by understanding and balancing - in an equitable, data-based manner - the priorities and needs of diverse departments. Maintain and extend the ethos of collegiality that exists in the College and create opportunities to celebrate the achievements of its students, faculty, and staff. Provide vision and leadership for the implementation of the University's Strategic Plan within the College. Prepare the College for the implementation of performance-based budgeting, taking into account the distinctive characteristics of the College's students and the work of its faculty. Represent the College in the community, seeking to extend its resources through fundraising and grants development. Work with faculty to address changes in the retention tenure and promotion process such as community-engaged scholarship and cultural taxation. Recruit and support a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:
Ph.D. from a regionally accredited institution in a discipline represented in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. A record of teaching and research excellence appropriate to a tenured full professor in the College. A minimum of three years of collaborative academic administrative experience in strategic and operational planning, program assessment, budgeting, and human resource management. A record of successful leadership in curriculum design, program assessment, faculty and staff development, and student advisement. Excellent listening, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. An inspirational, collaborative, and transparent leadership style; team-building and capacity-building skills. Demonstrated evidence of successful professional experience working and advocating for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). These are people who identify as Black, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Alaskan Native, Desi, Asian, Pacific Islander, Chicanx or Latinx.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
Administrative experience as a dean, associate dean, or center director. Organizational development and management experience (budget, planning, HR, conflict resolution) in an accredited institution of higher learning similar to Cal State Fullerton, including work with collective bargaining units. Successful fundraising and grant generation. Experience leading organizational change in a dynamic environment. Experience with community-engaged pedagogy, scholarship, and programming. Experience developing and implementing programs and educational opportunities to support a highly diverse student population, a high percentage of whom are first-generation, Pell-eligible, and underrepresented minority college students. Demonstrated successful usage of data to improve student success outcomes, such as graduation and retention rates, and narrowing of student equity gaps.
