Legislative Director

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is a 400,000-member-strong, progressive, fighting union with one of the largest and most diverse memberships in North America. Our members are employed in a range of workplaces, from multinational corporations to small manufacturers, state and local governments, colleges and universities, hospitals, and private non-profit organizations.

The UAW is building an ambitious political program to unite working class communities across the country and advance legislation that will win material gains for UAW members and workers everywhere. The UAW is seeking an experienced Legislative Director with the vision and experience to execute big, bold campaigns to help build this movement and secure legislative victories.

Candidates should be skilled and experienced at leading and developing legislative campaign strategies, mentoring, and coaching staff and leaders on electoral and legislative interventions and providing union leadership and staff with detailed legislative updates and working with other departments to develop a political education program. Ideal candidates will possess mastery of or willingness to learn about a range of issue areas, such as manufacturing, electric vehicles, healthcare, retirement, trade, higher education, and more.

This job is based out of the UAW’s Washington D.C. office. Candidates must be willing to work long and irregular hours and to travel frequently with overnight stays.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and maintain relationships on Capitol Hill and with the Administration.
• Build and cultivate relationships with other labor unions and allies; and inform and engage UAW’s membership in federal legislative campaigns where appropriate.
• Monitor legislative activity and provide analysis on legislation. Advocate for UAW’s position in a wide variety of settings.
• Develop testimony, letters of support, talking points, and other written statements.
• Draft and revise legislative language and keep relevant departments apprised of significant legislative and regulatory developments.
• Represent the UAW at various professional meetings/gatherings, conduct legislative briefings, and workshops at international and affiliate conferences and meetings.
• In collaboration with the Community Action Program (CAP) Director, develop legislative goals and campaigns to advance the union’s political program.
• Work with the CAP Director and other top staff to develop and implement electoral, legislative and political education strategies.
• Maintain and develop relationships on Capital Hill, including Members of Congress and other legislators in federal, state, and local government, and relevant staff.
• Supervise and direct legislative staff on legislative advocacy efforts and provide them with timely, effective feedback to improve performance and ensure campaign progress.
• Align staff work with campaign goals and needs.
• Guide staff on how to quickly assess and make strategic pivots in complex situations.
• Develop a system for providing union leaders and staff with regular updates on legislation and policies that impact our members.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• 5 years minimum experience in legislative, policy, or related work.
• Proven ability to assist organizations in running legislative campaigns.
• Experience in the labor movement.
• High proficiency in developing strategic plans and communicating them to staff.
• Aptitude for developing staff and fostering strong teams.
• Strong familiarity with the federal government, policies, and legislative process.
• Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities.
• A valid driver’s license.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a full time, exempt position based in Washington DC. The UAW offers a salary of $141,918, along with best-in-class health, retirement, and paid time off benefits.
