The School Bus Inspector will be an integral member of the School Transportation team and School Business Operations (SBO) bureau, providing technical assistance and guidance to school districts and transportation providers regarding multiple aspects of student transportation, with a focus on vehicle inspection.
Your Responsibilities:
As the School Bus Inspector, you will:
- Conduct inspections of vehicles used to transport students as mandated by Iowa Code.
- Use established criteria to determine vehicle inspection status.
- Document non-compliance related to established criteria.
- Professionally represent the Department to the field.

Hours: 7:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M., Monday - Friday, with daily in-state travel.
A successful candidate will bring or have the ability and desire to learn:
- Current driver's license.
- Ability to interpret condition and quality of mechanical and operational inspection criteria.
- Ability to determine defective or non-compliant items based on inspection criteria.
- Ability to document inspection details.
- Ability to enter and transmit inspection data using a laptop computer through the Department's inspection application.
- Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
- This is a physically challenging position. A successful candidate must be able to kneel, bend, stand, twist, climb, crawl, and navigate various types of surfaces while walking and standing for long periods of time.
- Willingness and ability to travel to in-state destinations daily.
- Ability to present information in a professional, competent, and understandable manner.
- Ability to interpret and break down highly technical information.
- Ability to manage self in relation to prioritization and time management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work in complex situations and meet deadlines.
- Passion for pursuing common goals in pursuit of public service.
DESIRABLE (OR) REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates with the following: - ASE Certification, or other industry certification
- ASE school bus certification
- Commercial driver's license (CDL)
- CDL with P or S endorsement
- Experience with transportation or specifically student transportation
- Experience using an Access database, or other database software

Minimum Qualification Requirements Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Eight years of full-time work experience in automotive or diesel mechanic work.
2) All of the following (a and b):
a. Six years of full-time work experience in automotive or diesel mechanic work; and
b. A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where one year of vocational education in an automotive or diesel mechanics program equals one year of full-time experience.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Mechanic Supervisor or four years of full-time work as a Mechanic.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
