Project/Position Overview:
The Georgetown District of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is located along the lower mile of the park in Washington, D.C. After initial ground-breaking in 1828, the section from Great Falls to Georgetown became operational in 1831. Within this section high locks, inlets, and masonry walls were used to optimize the use of space and provide maximum navigational capacity within the highly dense urban area.
During floods of large magnitude, the canal is used to convey water out of the city as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Emergency Manual. The Park staff has collaborated with the many federal, state, and local agencies to coordinate actions to utilize the canal's historic structures to protect the Georgetown community and utilities that cross the canal. The canal is part of the planned protection of hundreds of millions of dollars of privately-owned commercial and residential real estate, including foreign embassy properties, and publicly held real estate in the lower Georgetown area of Washington D.C. The preservation and continued maintenance of these structures in an operational state of service will limit damage to critical health and safety infrastructure and adjacent private property.
1. Repair Canal Inlet Lock 1 and Lift Locks 1, 2, and 5.
This project will rehabilitate Inlet Lock #1 complex, and Locks #1, #2, and #5 to an operable and sustainable condition, help safeguard the regulation of water on the lower five miles of canal and reduce the risk of flooding to the heart of Georgetown. The project stabilizes and preserves three of the remaining locks and one inlet lock in an area that sees over 1.2 million visitors annually. The project reduces operational constraints for the interpretive boat program and prevents greater repair costs in the future by abating further deterioration and stabilization issues for infrastructure.
This role is contingent upon award.
