Job description
The TEGNA-owned ABC affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa, is seeking an energetic, experienced, and talented Meteorologist to lead Good Morning Iowa. Des Moines is a severe weather market with numerous events to forecast, providing ample opportunities for learning and growth in a short time frame.
Local 5 is dedicated to providing top-notch weather coverage, with our "Most Accurate" weather team certified by WeatheRate for 18 years. The ideal candidate must possess a passion for excelling on significant weather days and demonstrating creativity during calmer periods.
In this role, you will play a crucial part in forecasting severe storms, tornadoes, snowstorms, blizzards, derechos, high heat, bitter cold, and flooding. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to share compelling stories highlighting the significance of weather in Central Iowa.

Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and compelling weather forecasts on multiple platforms.
- Produce clean, creative, and informative graphics to tell the weather story.
- Reliable and punctual for morning show schedule and flexible to alter course for severe weather coverage
- Prepare and deliver severe weather updates, interrupting regular programming as necessary.
- Front stories live from the field or studio with a strong on-camera delivery and the ability to ad-lib.
- Available for public appearances to support station initiatives.
- Pitch and craft stories for WOI Local 5, WeAreIowa.com, and our streaming platform WeAreIowa+.
- Develop contacts and sources within the community to help with original weather storytelling and breaking weather reporting.
- Bachelor of Science in Meteorology.
Strong communication skills (written/oral) for on-air delivery.
- A minimum of 2 years of on-air experience is preferred.
- Demonstrates ability to provide accurate weather forecasts using the latest weather technology in a multi-platform environment.
- Proven ability to work under pressure while meeting daily assigned deadlines.
- Ability to interact productively & positively within different environments.
- Applicable knowledge of multi-platform news-gathering tools and resources.
- Must actively participate in social media.
- Knowledge of WSI preferred.
