Student Success Advisor - Advising & Mentoring Office of Minority Student Affairs (MULTIPLE POSITIONS) The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking applications for multiple Student Success Advisors for the Advising and Mentoring Unit in the Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA). Founded in 1867, the University of Illinois is one of the nation's original 37 public land-grant institutions. The University of Illinois is home to approximately 56,000 students and 12,000 faculty and staff.
The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) provides leadership in developing, implementing, and delivering student support services to improve the retention, academic achievement, graduation, and success of undergraduates at Illinois, particularly, students who identify as first-generation, historically underrepresented, low-income, and/or educationally disadvantaged. OMSA promotes and develops educational opportunities and enrichment activities to help facilitate the educational and personal growth of student participants through organized activities and collaborative efforts with Student Affairs departments, the colleges and academic departments, and other campus and community partners. The OMSA is comprised of two administrative areas: The Academic Services Center (ASC) which includes Advising and Mentoring (A&M), First-Generation Student Initiatives (1GEN), and Tutoring and Academic Services (TAS); and TRIO, Administrative, Outreach, and Business Services (TAOBS). The OMSA's administers four TRIO programs which include two programs for undergraduates: TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars Program, and two additional programs for pre-college populations: TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Talent Search.
As a part of Student Success, Inclusion, and Belonging within Student Affairs, OMSA provides support for students to reach their personal, academic, and professional goals through curricular and co-curricular engagement opportunities. OMSA reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success, Inclusion, and Belonging (SSIB).
Job Summary The Student Success Advisor is responsible for providing advising, mentoring and coaching to select freshmen and transfer students in the Advising and Mentoring unit of the OMSA, as well as providing supervision for a cadre of graduate staff. This position will work closely with academic units to investigate and troubleshoot barriers that prevent student success..
Duties & Responsibilities - Advising
- Serves as an advocate and resource for assigned students and maintain frequent, systematic contact with those students.
- Collaborates with the colleges and departmental academic advisors to identify students whose behaviors align with early alerts and refer students for academic retention services.
- Collaborates with the colleges and departmental academic advisors to assists students in understanding and negotiating the academic rules and regulations that govern academic eligibility, progress, and successful degree completion.
- Builds, fosters and maintains intentional relationships with the colleges departments and/or relevant campus units to ensure accurate dissemination of information.
- Assist with the coordinating the OMSA communication strategy and shares said information with colleges, departments and/or relevant campus units.
- Directs purposeful discussion with students to identify academic strengths and challenges, gauge adjustment to academic and social life on campus, and provide advice regarding viable pathways that may lead to enhanced student success.
- Assists students in developing a student success plan, an informal co-curricular transcript and a realistic career pathway plan.
- Maintains detailed and thorough notes on individual advising sessions using unit and campus level reporting mechanisms.
- Assists with the development of reports, data analysis and assessment of students' first year term by term engagement
- Participates in the drop-in rotation to advise students seeking assistance but are not specifically targeted to receive assigned mentoring services.
- Maintains awareness of a variety of institutional information including new majors, minors, certificate programs, deadlines and important dates etc.
- Maintains awareness of current trends and best practices regarding student outreach and/or retention; assist with developing retention strategies, and work closely with staff in implementing, evaluating, and improving retention strategies.
- Assigned Area of Specialization and Supervision
- Identifies and coordinates the logistics and operations relating to the assigned area of specialization including but not limited to structure, planning, outreach and execution, and budget requests. Assigned areas may include but are not limited to academic success/GRIT teaching and/or programming, continuing student experience, service learning and leadership, career development and engagement, admissions, diversity, equity and inclusion etc.
- Participates in hiring of undergraduate student volunteers, workers and/or interns.
- Assists with onboarding, training and evaluating assigned undergraduate student volunteers, workers and/or interns.
- Supervises the daily work assignments of assigned undergraduate student volunteers, workers and/or interns.
- Co-develops and manages the communication strategy.
- Co-develops and manages the growth strategy and resource allocation for the assigned area of specialization.
- Co-develops and implements the related assessment plan.
- Other General Duties
- Assists in the general administrative planning and resource allocation.
- Participates in staff, committee, and other meetings as assigned.
- Participates in the annual new student recruiting and yielding activities.
- Performs evening, weekend and business/conference travel as requested.
- Assists with meeting the operational needs by performing other appropriate related duties.

Travel Requirements 10% Occasional travel for professional development, outreach, and training.
Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree from a discipline appropriate for administering comprehensive, collegiate academic support service and mentoring.
- Two years of experience with academic advising, student retention, academic coaching, mentoring, or counseling. A minimum of two years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, first generation, low-income, TRIO or EOP.
- A minimum of one-year experience in one or more of the following areas: academic success programming, study aboard, service learning and leadership, career development, admissions and/or diversity, equity and inclusion programming.
Preferred Qualifications - Master's degree from a discipline appropriate for administering comprehensive, collegiate academic support service and mentoring.
- Three years of relevant work experience.
- Working knowledge of student systems such (e.g., Banner, Uachieve or DARS, Transferology, etc.).

- Ability to learn and disseminate detailed information.
- Ability to work effectively individually and collaboratively.

Appointment Information These are 100% full-time Academic Professional positions, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start dates are as soon as possible after the interview, reference checks, and background check process. Target Salary is $58,000.
